The Ashes scene

I watched this movie a few years back, and I cried! Who else did in the scene???

My Social Studies class just finished watching this movie today and I almost cried a few times. This scene was definitely a tear-jerker.

God bless us, everyone... and don't stop believin'!

It was so melodramatic that I actually laughed, and I'm a very emotionally sensitive person.

Emotionally sensitive? Really? You laughed because you knew someone was murdered and they were sending the ashes back to the widow? Doesn't sound sensitive to me.

reply

It was sad, but to be honest, I was more surprised that they returned the gold ring. I thought stripping the jews of all their valuables was one of the other things the NAZI's did.

reply

That's a good point, drgolds, I didn't even think about that.
Maybe they decided to include the ring in the movie to make sure the audience understood exactly what was in the box. The first time I saw the movie was over 8 years ago (I was very young and had no idea what ashes looked like), and I think I only got that the ashes were human remains because of the ring. Another possibility is that the Nazis left the ring because it allowed the receiver to identify that the ashes were indeed her husband's.

I agree with you, evil, that was my opinion. They left the ring just to rub salt into the wound.
Never depend on anything and you will never be disappointed.

Maybe it was one of those "holocaust rings" they handed out during the holocaust.

Probably at that time it was normal to return a personal item that had belonged to a prisoner who dies while incarcerated. This movie is set in 1939 and the Holocaust as we know it would not even really get rolling for another year or so. Depending upon what time of the year the movie is set in the Germans and Soviets may not have even invaded Poland yet. That was what led to Britain and France declaring war which began World War II.
