Well acting is portraying and people aren't always manic and rubberfaced. Some characters are cold, withdrawn, stoic, unfeeling. That was Kitano's character. He actually did quite a good job. No pun intended, but a performances isn't always just what's at face value.

And yeah, real life people aren't exactly Jim Carrey. Most people I know have the same expression or similar expressions all the time. Only Hollywood expects people to be drama queens.
