WHAT DID TARANTINO HAVE TO DO WITH THIS!

Upon reading on imdb about this movie i saw the display of the cover, in which it has "Quentin Tarantinos" Sonatine on the spine. Someone please explain??????????????

reply

That would be "Quentin Tarantino's Rolling Thunder Pictures Presents Sonatine"

The movie was once released in the US under the Rolling Thunder Pictures label much like many other movies Tarantino brought to the US market that likely would never have been otherwise.

reply

Thank you very much for that

reply

Tarantino does that quite alot, and we should all be thankful for it. As long as people still fall for the "Quentin Tarantino presents" label, it should be used as frequently as possible.

reply

It is like a Quentin Tarantino book club. I try to find ones he endorses.

reply

He may be a mediocre filmmaker but his taste is really top notch. I agree with a whole lot of his top 100 choices.

reply

Will I do like the fact that he brings alot more movies to the U.S. it still bugs that he has to plaster his name on them bigger then the people who actually made the movie.

He funded the money to bring it over to the states just like Hero.

reply

are you sure he brought this over to the states?
because this his been out on video in america since the 1990's...and don't remember seeing the rolling thunder logo on the video i rented wat back when.

reply

He probably just bought the rights to distribute in the theatres and either didn't touch the video rights, or sold them afterwards.

By the way, Tarantino's name being larger than the movie name is essential because most people aren't going to know the name of the movie, it is Tarantino's influence alone that gets people to these movies. It isn't such a bad thing since if it gets people into the theatres they'll remember the film rather than Tarantino's name. Tarantino would probably put Ron Jeremy's name on the film if he felt that would get more people to see it.

I hope Tarantino continues to distribute amazing foreign films in America, it might even become quite financially viable considering the downturn in Hollywood business. Let's hope for the return of foreign films to the prominence it was at in the 60s.

Anyone else know what other movies Tarantino has helped bring to the western world or where I can find a possible list of the movies he has bought over from foreign countries.

Sonatine is really hard to find in Australia, i keep geting outbid on eBay, it retails for $28 in stores, is it worth purchasing for that price?

reply

I got sonatine, boiling point and violent cop in a trilogy boxset for £8.99 off of www.hmv.co.uk. I havent seen them yet so looking fowrd to them arriving!

reply

Dont know about the current sale but I got that box set in last years sale for a fiver! RESULT !! :)

reply

Killing Zoe. He also put one hundred grand into funding it.

Or could pocket a few more bucks off of it.

Sheesh

I don't think Tarantino is as greedy as other movie celebrities. If you've ever seen interviews with him, he can get pretty eccentric when he starts going into details about movies he likes. He genuinely loves film, which is visible from reading about his past too, before he was famous. But even with all his fame, he still loves what he does. I think he just wants to help spread movies that he likes around, that he thinks others might miss.

I know, it's impossible for a celebrity to want to do something if it isn't for money, right?

I agree with that. He seems sincere in his love of obscure films and wanting to share them to a largely ignorant North American Audience.

He isn't the first to do it. Spielberg and Lucas brought the films of Akira Kurosawa to a wider audience.

reply

I think that Tarantino bringing films over in the manner he is doing is simply brainwashing impressionable minds.

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman by Takeshi Kitano is a film that many have seen because of its reputation alone without the help of Tarantino. But then along comes a Tarantino Presents movie like Hero and boom, hits IMDB's Top 250. Hero was a visually beautiful film but the story was of little importance which most people agree on. Yet Zatoichi is beautiful, highly entertaining and the story is totally gripping but doesn't get the same credit because you don't have the morons talking it up since Tarantino didn't talk it up. Kitano's Fireworks is also another brilliant Hong Kong film that many people seem to overlook.

As for Tarantino Presents films, Iron Monkey was solid, but The Protector was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. The story was laughable, but so was the action.

Aha, boy do I feel foolish.

Last I checked Tarantinos' Rolling Pictures distribution company was no longer active.

If anybodies looking for good SE Asian films go to your local Chinatown, find a good Hong Kong video store and get a membership. All HK movies are subbed in English as it's technically bilingual there. You'll find more than just HK movies, you'll find movies from all over the world made for the Hong Kong market, most of them subbed English.

Now you don't have to order them from some overpriced website never knowing what you're going to get.

Stand by for justice!

reply

He helped get it released on DVD in the US.

reply

His intro/outro on the video is certainly useless, regardless of his name being used to bring a larger audience to the film.

reply

Not to mention When he says Kitano's name Tarantino says it wrong. Its not TakAshi, it is TakEshi.

reply

This movie was in theaters back in the 90's??? Sh!t, If I would have known that I'd gone to every screening.. Are you sure this movie was release on the big screen in the U.S???

reply

I'm quite sure it wasn't release on big screens in the USA, which is, IMO, the best reason why we should always be thankful there are famous (and rich) fans like Tarentino that are able to help these movies be brought to larger audiance !

reply

I saw it on a big screen in L.A. but don't remember if it was a special screening or what but remember several scenes. I knew a lot of film buff types so possible it was a screening arranged by Japanese film aficionados
