shareI advise you to watch the film before commenting on it please!
shareThere are discussions on whether he is or is not Jack Sommersby. Although quite far-fetched, it is possible to interpret the movie in a way that he is the real Sommersby.
I myself think he's not. Otherwise the ambigious moral of the whole film doesn't make any sense.
CAUTION SPOILERS..........
No....He was not Jack Sommersby...He knew him and took over his life when Jack Sommersby died....
I tend to agree with sxychic - I went back and forth during the whole film, but there's one little statement at the end, when he's about to be hung, and he says "I won't be Horace Townsend......again."
Now it could be interpreted that he was Townsend during the brief moment in court, or he had been mistaken previously...
But he had to say he was Sommersby otherwise the towns people would lose their land and money.
I love this film - I bawl every time!!!

He was really Horace Townsend, not Jack Sommersby.

Do you think he wants some cheese?
He was Horace Townsend. I believe he states at the end when in the room with Laurel that he was in a jail cell with Jack Sommersby because he looked so much like him that there was confusion. Thats how he knew the things he knew about Jack. Then I believe he says that the night they killed Conklin, Jack also was killed and he buried Jack, but made people believe that it was Horace that had died. Thus, made people believe that he was Jack. :-)
