Laurel's ruby brooch
Would a ruby brooch be worth $1000 back then? That's what Laurel said it was worth when they were raising money to buy the tobacco seeds. A thousand dollars then would be a million now.

1000 USD would be nowadays around 20k (10k in 1993). Sounds realistic to me, quite a big sum, but not awfully overvalued.
But they sold the tabacco dirt cheap. 3 times below todays price and that already low compared to value before.
