An INCREDIBLE Movie!

I got this movie because I'm a huge Jodie Foster fan,
and because it sounded interesting,
but I was totally unprepared for what an INCREDIBLE movie this is!
No *spoilers* here, but I was kept guessing - and CARING - about the ending
right till the end, the ending was gut-wrenching, and I don't remember the last time a motion picture moved me to such deeply-felt tears.
Tightly written, well-acted, socially conscious, and psychologically probing, my only question now is why this movie didn't win several Academy Awards. A 10+ all the way!!!!

Don't know why on earth it only has 5.8 on IMDB

probably because it's a chick's flick. too unrealistic.

Unrealistic? Maybe you need to get out and experience the world of real love and devotion.

Chick flick? My husband and several of our male friends were moved to unmanly tears at this movie. Hubby has even watched it two or three times, which is indeed an accolade.

It's loosely and indirectly based on a true story, by the way. See Le retour de Martin Guerre for a more accurate adaptation.

I don't see how it can be unrealistic. People need to understand war trauma and the fact that years of absence can change people's perspective, even your own family, again, during times of war. This people went from rich to poor.

nonsense. this film was absolute *beep* go check out the original!

What the $%*& is a Chinese Downhill?!?

Fabulous and deep.

It does a wonderful job of plumbing the concepts of honor and redemption. Worthy of classic literature, Homeresque, if you will.

And well acted by all.

LOVED IT!!! a true romance but so much deeper than you see these days. Never that crazy about Gere, but he was HOT in this movie!

I totally agree about the gut wrenching ending and after 50+ times seeing it I still cry deeply at the end...I agree with you about Jodi's performance...thought provoking movie all around.

This is a lovely film, simple in story telling structure, beautifully photographed and performed, it very much feels and plays like a classic era period piece. There are some exquisite scenes through the trial and afterwards and the story line provokes thought and sympathy. Jodi Foster really shines in this film.
