This movie is a joke and a waste of time (possible spoilers)

I am watching this movie now after having spent two weeks trying to find it - I have been wanting to see it hoping it would be an accurate depiction of a sniper's world, their methods, etc. What a disappointment from a movie titled Sniper.

What I was hoping would be a useful insight into the way snipers work and get things done is a 90 minute cringe-fest in which Tom Berenger's part is entirely made up of tired old cliches and formulaic imagery: the dog tags he keeps playing with to illustrate the number of partners he's lost, the indifference and condescendence with which he treats his new Washington-appointed "partner", the supposed nightmares he is having about the people he kills, how he entertains dreams about going back to a home that's not there anymore, and so on.

I think this is just another case of a great idea for a movie but extremely badly executed: bad writing, bad acting, truly horrible editing (especially the dream/flashback sequences), inaccurate depiction of what I have come to think of when I think of a sniper i.e. a calculated, meticulous and patient killing machine capable of spending days under the same bush waiting for the perfect shot. Not to mention the childish rifle scope graphics which I would have thought the technology was there in 1993 to make them look a bit more professional and believable.

I find scenes like the one where Beckett urges Miller to "feel the rush" and to "nail that mother***er now" simply ridiculous and difficult to watch. I don't care how stupid you assume your audiences are, that can't be the way a seasoned army professional such as a sniper talks. Or the scene in the beginning of the movie where a helicopter flies in to extract Beckett and Papich and Beckett goes: "Aw, those dipsh*ts, I told them no daylight", like he is surprised to see them and as if something as important as the extraction out of a mission like that would not be decided well in advance and stuck to.

Here's a few non-rhetorical questions I have:

1. How come they take a train to the jungle and do not get flown in? (I know Beckett explains it at some point, but it just seems a bit odd).

2. Why don't they have their faces painted throughout the mission but only in the beginning?

3. Don't they seem to be walking through the jungle and into the populated areas a bit too casually, in a very conspicuous, non-sniper kind of way?

4. Why don't they infiltrate the hacienda at night? The whole scene where they prance around that farm in their ghillie suits in broad daylight (especially Miller) is almost funny to watch. Not to mention Miller sticking his rifle out of the barn once he has taken his position.

5. Why does the helicopter picking Beckett and Miller in the final scene have signal lights flashing? On a mission like that I would imagine they would want to be as difficult to spot as possible.

I am sorry if I sound too rabid about this, but I guess in my quest to find a decent sniper movie I felt really let down by a movie that does not do its title justice.

What IS the best sniper movie out there? Could it be Shooter?

Your mistake was expecting anything particularly realistic from Hollywood. This was an OKay action flick, nothing more. If you want to find out about snipers read a book.

propaganda=on IMDB, apparently any movie with Americans as the good guys

I think the problem is (and with movies in general) there can often be a trade off between realism and entertainment (or atleast in Hollywood's eyes.) All the stuff you have mentioned has most likely been added in by the writer to make the finished product more appealing to the dumb masses.

Personally I like this movie - just because I find it enjoyable and easy to watch. If I wanted to watch something more realisic then there is always the discovery channel...

It's a movie.
I am an ex-marine and I had buddys from Nam who killed themselves because of their nightmares.
Not everyone can callus up.

ex marine once a marine always a marine

Ex Marine?? really?

If you were actually in the Corps, I believe you would know that there are no ex Marines.

This was posted a while ago but i'll go ahead anyway and try to answer the best way i can. First off the movie came out in '93. I've noticed over time that movies in the past were not always accurate. Movies have evolved since then and nowadays they go for more realism and accuracy.

1. I think Beckett wanted to take the train because of the mishap extraction in the beginning when his spotter was killed, so he would rather do it the hard way than to trust those guys again.

2. I really don't remember ever really seeing their faces UNpainted throughout the movie unless the paint gradually was wearing off until they did another touch up.

3. Not quite sure about this one, since they got off the train, all i remember is seeing jungle since then, if your talking about before that then i would have to say that the area they were in was safe enough to be going around like that.

4. I thought they were waiting for the target to show up, which didn't show until it was day, when all the men came out with guns covering the guy that was in the car with his girl/wife.

5. I guess they were not expecting a whole squad to be behind the people they were extracting, anyway thats what the machine gun on the chopper is for.

So far i think the best Sniper movie is shooter as far as facts and realism.
I like Sniper enough to have it in my DVD collection for good ol' fashioned action movie viewing.

well, i liked it alot. I wanted a action movie and i got it.

Ditto.

How petty.

You were looking for "insight" into sniping from a film? LOL!!!! Why am I not surprised that I'm reading this kind of thing on IMDb?

This movie is not a joke! I loved it the first time I saw it and I just saw it again on DVD. I bought it and intend to keep it 'coz it is a pretty good pscho thriller to me, not an action movie. I get my adrenaline by watching how Beckett kills DeSilva (the other sniper) and many other things are pretty well done! The other Luis Llosa movies are horrible, but this is by far the best movie by him. This is also one of the best Sniper movie other than recent Shooter. But again the end of Shooter is not that realistic. All your questions are answered before, but I am curious why it is so difficult for you to understand why they took the train? Why wouldn't the paint on their faces wear off? These are all natural. ochoa is coming during day.

The slow bullet was awesome, prior to matrix. It gave an extended sense of happiness that the cartel lord has got the justice. Many other things are pretty good in this film - many to list here. I do not know how people cannot love this film.

This film is fantastic. Shooter was great but doesnt compare to this gem. The Sniper movies aren't too bad either.

Actually, Beckett is a Marine.

1. How come they take a train to the jungle and do not get flown in? (I know Beckett explains it at some point, but it just seems a bit odd).

You just answered your own question. If they were to be dropped in via bird, they might as well say over the loud-speaker "Here we are bad guys, come and get us".

2. Why don't they have their faces painted throughout the mission but only in the beginning?

I did notice that half way throw the movie, but in the last 30 minutes (or so) Miller had paint again.

3. Don't they seem to be walking through the jungle and into the populated areas a bit too casually, in a very conspicuous, non-sniper kind of way?

They sure were. They also lacked noise-discipline.

4. Not to mention Miller sticking his rifle out of the barn once he has taken his position.

This could have been a story-line tactic that would then allow an enemy sniper to spot him, thus Beckett can't take the shot but must save Miller's life.

5. Why does the helicopter picking Beckett and Miller in the final scene have signal lights flashing? On a mission like that I would imagine they would want to be as difficult to spot as possible.

I'd imagine it isn't that difficult to spot a chopper even without it's lights ["chucka chucka chucka chucka"]. Therefor, I think the pros outweigh the cons in having the lights on: need lights to land the bird and they might be trying to track Miller and Beckett. Besides, in the first place Beckett and Miller shouldn't have had enemies on their tails, but they did and the Marines flying the bird didn't know that.

I think the movie was OK. It could have been better of course.

- Why isn't there any visible difference between signatures and comments? -

This has to be the absolute best response I've read to questions like this on this board. Very well done. And very true.

I noticed these things as well, but as another poster mentioned, there is a line between realism (find a documentary or join the Corps and prove your salt) and a Hollywood movie. While some of the scenes did make me cringe a little because they were so far from being a realistic tactic (exposed barrel, etc.), I admit I could let enough of it slide to thoroughly enjoy this film,...as a film. Not as some type of information network.

There were more "plot holes" than the ones you mentioned when it comes to sniping, but I think most of us get your point.

And in response to another poster's comment about the movie Shooter, I found that to be exceptional and I saw some extremely realistic aspects (and some not-so ones) but the detail of accuracy outweighed any theatrical brilliance added for the sake of movie goers.

To me its a movie and rather enjoyable. I had no expectations that I would understand the world of the sniper.

Its that man again!!

Because it's a theatrical production, which at the core is a metaphoric story about redemption and coming of age.
