anyone know who made the rifle's used in the movie

looking for information of who made the rifle's in the movie. What were the caliber were the weapons? It looks like the on was a model 700 remington but couldnot tell what kind the younger sniper used.

reply

I believe that the rifle is a Remington 700, that is fitting with US military snipers, according to what I have read, the US Marine Corps snipers do use that rifle. It is generally chambered for a .308 Win (7.62 x 51 mm NATO).

I had thought that the younger sniper used a Heckler & Koch PSG1 (also is chambered for a .308 Win) rifle, I have since been told that I was wrong, but it does look a lot like a PSG1. It could also be a H&K MSG 90, they are similar though the stocks are quite different, or a H&K SR9, this is semi-auto only, civilianized version of the G3 rifle and was (?) sold with a "PSG1" style stock.

EDIT: Read the trivia for the movie, it says what the rifle is -

from the trivia for Sniper
"The weapon used by Billy Zane in this movie is not an H&K PSG-1, an expensive precision semi-automatic rifle commonly used by special forces snipers. It is an H&K SR-9 TC , a similar but cheaper version of the PSG-1 that was designed for civilian sales."

reply

Actually, a PSG1 is civilian legal too. PSG1s are not often employed by the military. I'm not saying never but the ejection of brass from the PSG1 does not lend itself well to stealth.

reply

Plus, they're crazy expensive...

reply

We're talking about the government. They have no concept of crazy expensive. 馃槣

reply

Well, it's complicated - they like to buy cheap stuff they can *pretend* is expensive, so they can divert the extra money towards paying for super secret stuff like flying saucers or non sanctioned black ops to assassinate narco guerrillas...
In all seriousness, the price of the PSG1 was pretty much what led H&K to introduce the MSG90. They built the PSG1 and militaries and police forces over the entire world all agreed that it was a really nice gun, but no they would not be buying any as they couldn't justify throwing all that money at a single firearm. H&K then produced the rougher and tougher (and far cheaper) MSG90 which sold a lot better...

The bolt action gun was either a USMC M40A1 or a Remington 700 40XB.

It's been years since I've seen the movie but I remember the stock was wider underneath the barrel and didn't look like an M40A1....so I'm guessing a 40XB.

I'm guessing both were chambered for the standard military sniper round, .308 (M118 ammo).

Anyone know what type of rifle the enemy sniper used?

reply

I'm guessing a SVD Dragunov.

reply

yeah, enemy sniper used a SVD
beckett had a M40a1

reply

I too could have sworn Miller had a PSG-1 as the SR9(TC)is only fairly accurate. However since he wasnt the world's greatest sniper its possible he didnt get setup with a $9000 rifle.

reply

Wiki says it's an SR9, but then that doesn't neccesarily mean squat. If you think about it, a PSG1 is quite delicate (it's made ot a very high degree of precision so it's mechanically unreliable outside of the target range or police marksman scenarios). Also, the PSG1's mechanism (roller-locked delayed blowback; it's a heavilly modified G3 when to comes down to it) is known to eject brass up to 10 metres away. That's just suicide in a military sniper situation. Besides, this film is a film, not a documentary, and so a 10000USD prop might not be such a fantastic idea :D

Another point, regarding ammo. IIRC, when Miller goes beserk (after making his first kill) he empties his rifle. That's why he picks up the round that Beckett ejects when he is captured. Now, I know he's supposed to be a sniper and all, but carrying 5 rounds into a combat situation? I don't think he carries a sidearm either (when they clear that village in the jungle, Beckett draws an M1911A1, but Miller just carries his rifle at the hip). Okay so police marksmen are used to taking the shot and then everything being clear, but surely he would have experienced some sort of basic combat training at some point? (Also, that round from the ground would have introduced dirt to the mechanism, which is a real big can of worms...)

it's been a while since iv'e seen ''sniper'' but, i know that was not a PSG-1,it had mettallic sights didnt it? i think it was an MSG 90 but i remember it having traits of both rifles- the producers may have thought that blending the rifles would make it more interesting. anyways the role that billy zane played was the non-militant olympic sniper?? im not sure but, in the real military would have never had anyone that was not phsycologically screened, he was definatly not a sniper. he was emotionally unstable. real snipers are stone cold- no remorse at all

reply

Beckett had a SIG, most likely a P226 that is the sidearm of choice for most special forces. The guy who tortures him may have had a modified 1911.

reply

nohopeme9 he doesnt have an m1911 that was a sig p229

God dammit Jack Bauer. You really are the man.

reply

It's quite possible the SR9 was used in place of the PSG-1 due to cost. Why would a studio care if the rifle is actually any less accurate? They just need something that looks cool on screen for the non-gun nut masses. For the record, I am NOT a part of that demographic :)

I don't have an opinion. The word "opinion" implies the possibility I'm wrong.

The bad guy sniper used a Belgiun made FAL.

The the rifles used in the movie is a M40A1 which is basicly a Remington M700 that the USMC had redesigned to thir spec, a HK SR9 which is commonlymisaken for a PSG-1 but the shorter barrel and the use of iron sight clearly make this a SR9. and finally the rifle used in by the rogue sniper is a russin Dragonaiv SVD. All three rifles chambered for .308 win or 7.62 NATO
here is a like to HK site about the sr9 http://www.hkpro.com/sr9.htm

reply

The SVD is chambered in 7.62X54R (Rimmed). THe cartridge has been in service for approximately a century. It's a good round, recoil is tolerable in a Nagant Carbine, little loud though.

Miller's rifle is an Hk SR9TC with the original factory style handguard replaced with one from an Hk91 series with the light bipod (metal feet version) and an A.R.M.S. model 1S claw scope mount (old style with the individual ring cuts, not the full 1913 picatinny rail). Scope is a generic optic with flashing lights to make it look more "high speed and modern".

To anyone interested in what specific guns were used in this, or any other movie, I can highly recommend the Internet Movie *Firearms* DataBase - imfdb.com
Very informative site - they identify Beckett's rifle as a Remington R700, modified to resemble a USMC M40A1, Miller's as a Heckler & Koch SR9 (TC), both rifles chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO.
The bad guy sniper had a Russian Dragunov, properly known as an SVD, chambered in 7.62x54R

They can also show you how to spot the differences between an M16A1, A2 and an A4 as well as give you a couple of hundred reasons why the choice of guns in most Call of Duty games is wrong.
