Sleepless In Seattle or You've Got Mail?

I thought You've Got Mail was so much better than Sleepless.

I like both but I like You've Got Mail better. The main thing SIS is one of those films where you wait and wait the entire movie for something to happen, in this case for them to get together and meet and then the film ends. You don't get to see any interaction between them. In You've Got Mail they are interacting the entire movie and I like that much better.

Yeah, but at least Meg Ryan is way less annoying in Sleepless, and has better hair. I hated her "I'm-too-good-to-do-my-hair-in-the-morning" phase back in the late 90s. It looked like crap.

What about Joe Versus The Volcano? I prefer that one over these two, tho I know "Joe" isn't everyone's cup of tea.

You got mail! I always cry when he says "Don't cry Shopgirl" and wipes away her tears. It's gets me every time. My husband and I met online back in 1993 when it was rare to meet online. We call You Got Mail
our movie.

You've Got Mail is better.

You've Got Mail definitely, even though it's an updated version of Shop Around the Corner. It doesn't have an annoying kid for one thing.

Oh c'mon, he wasn't that annoying!

It seems these days that any kid that's not a cute little girl is annoying to people.

You've Got Mail. The way they meet (or could have met) is much more organic and two-way, not a one-way creepy stalker thing like Sleepless. I like the supporting cast in YGM more, but SiS has a better soundtrack.

In both movies though I don't think they would have ended up together. Farfetched.

You've Got Mail by a wide margin. Superb supporting cast, good and timely music and excellent story line.

Sleepless in Seattle. Shocked no one gave it a vote.

You've Got Mail is SO overtly cutesy and everyone is on their best behavior. The script is lame. And only the ending is sweet.

SIS also earned two (2) Oscar nominations, including for its original screenplay.

reply

That's a fair summation, but also remember that Sleepless In Seattle was the only one WITH an original screenplay. You've Got Mail was the THIRD version on an original film (The Shop Around the Corner (1940) and In the Good Old Summertime (1949)) and in some instances, the script was nearly word-for-word, only updating where it needed for current terminology. So the "cutesy" of the script probably had something to do with [the original it came from] being written in a time when movies might have been a little more cutesy.

In most ways, I liked Sleepless more, except for the fact that I couldn't stand Walter. His presences was necessary., but his character very cringe worthy, as was Annie's any time she was with him. I loved her otherwise though.

Good review. Voted for SIS, too. I just watched its youtube clips again. Not realistic, but funny. Couldn't remember YGM that much. Isn't it dated? I guess SIS is dated, too, with the clothes, hair and cars, but not just from the title. I'm divorced w/two kids so I could relate better to SIS. As for YGM, I tried paid online dating for a year and mostly got to the "drinks" or lunch/dinner afterward stage. After a couple of dates you know. No steady dating. A lot of e-mails tho. You can weed them out with e-mails as they do you. I had pics taken by a friend and she did a great job making it look professional. So I'm interested in one gal who looks good, but only has a below average snapshot photo. Kinda blurry. Could be her when she was younger (?). I mentioned getting a set of photos done by a friend or a professional thinking heck I can do a pretty good job myself if we get to the dinner stage. But the way I wrote it came out wrong like she "needed" a professional photo. It's like trying to explain a bad joke that she didn't get. I'm better just meeting thru friends or other as I do better in person. Anyway, forget YGM.
