would these guys really kick ass in real life?

well, would they? I mean Donnie Yen and Jet Li are exceptionaly fit and flexable and fast.. but would they hold there own in a UFC match or against some muggers in a NY back alley? Both Donnie and Jet were Wu Shu champions (apparetly both had the same master) and from my understading, Wu Shu is mainly for entertainment purposes and not really a full contact sport.
interested in hearing your theories...

Are you kidding, they would beat the *beep* out of any lame muggers in NY. There's no other theory about that.

UFC, I don't think so.

Muggers, of course.

I have no idea why people think martial art actors can fight in real life. They've constantly said that they are fighters on screen only and in real life they cant fight. Jet Li said himself that if he were in the situation of Cradle to the Grave where he fought Tito Ortiz,Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell they would kill him.

Against muggers in a back alley, it depends on whos mugging them and if they have weapons, but they probably would get robbed or killed if they fought back.

Wushu is pretty much gymnastics and forms with weapons, however sometimes Sanda or Sanshou is taught alongside Wushu, Sanda is a full contact sport that is like kickboxing with takedowns, I doubt Donnie Yen or Jet Li was taught this though.

this is a bunch of crap... Jet Li is the number one martial arts master in China, or he was back in the day, he can kick butt. Most everything he does is real, it's great.

Go watch a REAL biography of Bruce Lee. Some dumb kid, outside a studio I believe, also thought the same as you and believed Lee was hype and full of *beep* Lets just say that there's nothing an ass-whooping from Bruce Lee can't change.

Bruce Lee practiced Jeet-Kun-Do first and foremost. His acting career was just a way to earn a living while doing what he loved. He was the grandfather of mixed martial arts, and the first person to fully utilise skillsets of multiple martial art forms. At the time it was considered almost evil to cross-learn multiple martial arts. Most teachers wanted nothing to do with people trained in any disimilar martial art. Bruce Lee taught people to garner whatever they could from any sources they could, rather than focusing on one single martial art form. Add to that his truly incredible body conditioning and workout regiment and you have a force to be reckoned with.

If anyone for a moment thought Bruce Lee was "just some actor", then they are seriously ignorant of reality, and definitely deserve to have their ass handed to them if they tried to take him on in a back alley.

All that said, there is another interesting question, of whether or not Bruce Lee could compete with a modern MMA fighter (e.g. a UFC fighter). My personal viewpoint is that I don't think he would do well, as he believed that hands and legs were the important part, not grappling and ground-work. He would do extremely well in a kickboxing match, but in MMA, you almost always will end up on the ground, and if you don't have Jiu-Jitsu or Combat Sambo in your arsenal, you will get destroyed. However, I think if he were alive and in his prime today, he would embrace Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and master it as he mastered the other skills he took on.

Donnie Yen would murder anyone that messed with him an an alley, unless they had some serious weaponry at their disposal. I don't know about an MMA match, because that is a sport and not reality, but I don't think they'd do very well. Espcially Jet Li, as he's a very traditional internal stylist. But as I understand it, Donnie Yen studied lots of MMA and grappling for his movie Flashpoint, and is in great shape, so you never know.

He could certainly smoke some 19 year old mouth-breather that decided to shave his head and wear a Tapout shirt and become a professional fighter overnight because he likes to watch the UFC at the place where he eats hotwings.

Samus Aran you have no knowledge who Lee is { Lee's father Lee Hoi-chuen was a famous Cantonese opera star. Because of this, Lee was introduced into films at a very young age and appeared in several films as a child. Lee had his first role as a baby who was carried onto the stage in the film Golden Gate Girl. By the time he was 18, he had appeared in twenty films } he was an artist before practicing Martial Arts, still i am not saying he could not kick arse in real life there are lots of events and stories to prove that he can.

Theres a big difference between performing a set of choreographed moves in a staged environment, and managing a no holds barred street fight. Donnie and Jet just aren't brawlers, they have combat skill, but outside the ring where anything goes, I think a big more aggressive fighter may get the drop on them. A UFC pro would fair much better in a street mugging situ

Wushu and street fighting are totally different things. Fighting is wild, I haven't been in one myself but everyone knows its just straight wildness. However I do believe that Donnie Yen can hold his own since it is known he has knowledge on MMA and TKD. Don't know about Jet Li tho.

Wu Shu also involves sparring(or sanda, as mentioned above), which can definitely teach you to kick A$$.

The average person would stand no chance against these guys. They may not be true brawlers, but they still have skill. Dont discount them that quickly, they are in great physical condition, and could kick most people into next week.

A UFC fighter, however, is taught the most deadly and efficient ways to just beat the crap out of someone, or cause them so much pain that they can no longer continue. It is so efficient and precise that MMA is widely considered the deadliest of fighting styles, and someone like Jet Li or (and I hate to say it) Donnie Yen would get their SHIZNIT wrecked.

On a side note, I am about to begin Wushu lessons from a coach who trained with the same Master that Jet and Donnie trained under. I start tomorrow. I am so nervous, he is going to kick my A$$(not literally of course)

i'm guessing that if they were goin up against people who knew wat they were doin, then they probably would get owned. wushu is a form of sport to keep you healthy and physically fit, rather than so u can go out kick ass whenever u want. but i guess if they were up 1v1 against some mugger then they should be able to hold their own.
