Does that kid really hit that note?

When the City High kid is singing "Oh Happy Day", does he really hit that note, or is it synthesized?

reply

I have no idea but it almost sounds like he did.

reply

I don't know who hit that note, but whoever did hit it perfectly!

reply

It sounded authentic to me, but I guess there's no way to know for sure.

reply

How high was that note, and was it in the whistle register or head voice?

reply

From WikiPedia

"Toby was the singer who sang the piercing boy-'coloratura soprano' note in Sister Act 2. He was 16 when he acted in the movie. It was a whistle register note- an E6+."

reply

Whatever note it was, it was nuts-in a good way of course!!

What are the purposes of signatures!!..

It's too bad that Wikipedia loosely translates to "find a reliable source" :)

Actually, i believe it was an F natural.

Dear me! What is that unpleasant aroma? I fear the sewer may have backed up during the night.

reply

If you really want to get technical and all scientific, an E# isn't the same as an F natural.

The piano is "even tempered" meaning all of the notes except for the A440 it is tuned to are slightly out of tune.

The filming dates for Sister Act 2 were from May 24, 1993 - August 20, 1993. Toby Ryan was born November 26, 1978. Doing the math, Toby wouldn't even have turned 15 years old until well after filming was completed. He was, in fact, 14 years old when filming began, not 16. I have no doubt he hit that note himself. And it gives me chills every time I hear it.

Well, can't he just beam up?
This is *reality* Greg.

reply

The actor's voice didn't sound like it started to change yet, so it is very possible (guys, help me out here) that he did.

reply

It's possible...I'd say YES...maybe...but yes.

reply

It absolutly was him singing that note.

reply

that was definitely ryan singing....

reply

I don't know if he actually sang that note, though it sure sounds like he did, but it is incredibly high, even for a boy.

reply

As a 4 year music major, I can tell you it's possible. It's rare, but it's totally do-able with the right vocal chords. It was an E6 (I checked it on a piano), and it would place him into the coloratura soprano range, so whoever wrote the wiki article knew what they were talking about. I'm pretty sure he hit it. Even with it so high, it has a more distinct quality when it comes from a Male set of vocal chords, and I hear it in the voice of whoever is hitting the note. I'm sure it's him. I'd be quite surprised to find out otherwise. - Great Song, great film :)

reply

Whoever it was, I couldn't stop myself from thinking it sounded like he'd just been kicked it the gonads. (Yeah, I know, I'm going straight to Hell.)

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

reply

What is an E6? In choir we just say A-G, and flat, sharp, natural. no numbers.

Dear me! What is that unpleasant aroma? I fear the sewer may have backed up during the night.

reply

I guess it's an E note in the sixth octave in the piano.

Ironically it's easier for a young man during his early years to hit notes like that rather than much later. Supposedly a guys vocal's go mono once they get older ~ which is why the 80's group Menudo always kept replacing their members (worried that once they got a certain age they would not be able to carry a certain tone).

Can't recall the singers name but was watching a Where are They now show and they were discussing about the guy from 80's group A-Ha and how he always could hit a high note. They showed a current concert from him now and it showed that he still could carry that note.

Now not sure how true this is but heard women can do it from young age and up much better (i.e. Mariah Carey) although don't think I heard her in recent years hit the note like she use to. But could be she likes to save her voice.

reply

I had no idea that he was one of the singers in City High, interesting.

reply

Some men still can by working with their falsetto range.

It's mostly to sing classical music written for castrati but I imagine yodelers do the same thing.

reply

If you trust Wikipedia. it says he did...and it was an Eb6

reply

He hits that E6 note. However, he cannot sing that high anymore. His voice is 2 octaves deeper today than it was in the movie Sister Act 2.

reply

yeah he really did. there's a lot of talented singers in this movie. i liked whoopi goldbergs face when he hit the note it was so funny!

reply

I think the note in question may have been a G-Sharp but I can't be for sure.

reply

I am certain that was his voice, young boy can hit a high note like that unil he becomes a man. A good example would be Michael Jackson when he was a kid. He could hit a high note when he was very young but as soon as he turned into a man, he couldn't hit that note anymore.
