I found this film to be the most intelligently made ghost film ever made.

I have an online Blockbuster account and have been able to find quite a few movies that are not carried in rental stores. They do have a lot of hard to find DVDs that I have been able to track down and add to my list. Like the 1983 TV version of Alice in Wonderland.

Yes, it's underrated.

River Phoenix steals the entire film, he's gold. He's hypnotic to watch in this film. He's virtually speechless, yet through his body movements and eyes, he physically conveys hallucinatory derangement. He's brooding and mournful, and looks like a savage.

Thanks Sam Shepard for a unique gem of a film.

I saw this at a film festival in London back in '93 or '94, and I have to say, I thought it was pretty mediocre. But mostly I just think River Phoenix wasn't very convincing in it. He gave terrific performances in other films, but not this one.

I have been a huge movie fan/buff my entire life. With thousands in my memory bank; I pull this film out all the time.
"Silent Tongue" has held me since I saw it over 14 years ago; I don't know if you call that a bad movie. That is what a film should do, isn't it? And no memories of disdain, as some hollywood tripe often does! Sam Shepard is an amazing writer and this movie was totally under-rated for sure!

I agree, it is quite underrated. The part with Phoenix's wife was one of the scariest and unexpected things I had seen back then. I'm not sure how well this film stands up now, but back in the day it was great.

I agree it is much better than the rating suggests. It has a unique story that is slowly revealed. It is artfully directed. The acting is all top notch. The first time I watched it I found myself thinking about it for days. It makes you think about the characters, their circumstances and their choices.

The problem, I'm afraid, is too many viewers don't want to think at all. They don't want to have their phobias invaded either. I think too many were turned off by a young man's obsession with the decaying body of his dead wife. And they couldn't get beyond that. They missed the fact that he was in love with her soul, and he was holding on to the only thing left he could touch. It is a great film, but obviously not for everyone.

I rated in a 9.
