I was always under the impression that River died before filming was completed and there was a question over whether the film could be released sue to the outstanding scenes which were still to be completed - but having seen the film, were there scenes that were missed out from the storyline as I couldn't identify any which used a "River" double?

This was filmed around April/May of 1992, so it was about a year and half before he died. It's just that the film was not publicly released until early 1994, a few months after River died. River's last completed film was The Thing Called Love, which was filmed in the early part of 1993 and released a couple of months before he passed way. Then of course Dark Blood was the last thing he ever worked on, in fact on the day he died, he had been shooting scenes for that film and it was scheduled to wrap up in mid-November 1993.
