Criterion are the Rhino of the film world; re-issueing brilliant, esoteric works that didn't quite get the respect they deserved in their day.

I agree. Its also great to see them starting to reissue some of their older dvd's even if just for the purpose of lowering the price.
Their new distributor is making my fiscal life much more responsible. I'm loving the fact that i'm able to get 2 new releases (which are in quality terms just getting better and better) for the price of one old one. Kind of funny to see High and Low, for example, available in the new, vastly superior edition for 30 bucks sitting beside the old dvd for 60 something.

its $23.97 now..

Can I ask you a stupid question? Why they're re-releasing it? I thought only very old movies need to be rereleased by critetion. Its not hard to find Short Cuts on dvd now, right ?

reply

The rumor among Criterion collectors is that they lost the publishing rights for the book Short Cuts. The re-release will be the same content without the book. It's also rumored that Criterion is likely to lose the rights to the movie next year meaning it will go out of print.

"to lose the rights to the movie next year meaning it will go out of print."

for Short Cuts? But its releasing already in 1 week... Or you mean after that?

reply

I mean that Criterion is probably going to lose the rights to produce the movie sometime next year. The edition coming out next week will probably not be in print for long.

That is entirely speculation that I've read somewhere else and I can't verify it. Criterion does lose licensing rights to movies occasionally and Short Cuts, according to my source, is likely to be one.
