Short Cuts is masterfully directed by Robert Altman and brilliantly written. The film weaves together the stories of several different people's lives and shows how they all connect with one another. The characters are complex and well developed. They all have flaws but remain believable. The ensemble cast, (which includes Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore, Tim Robbins, Lily Tomlin, Frances McDormand, Peter Gallagher, Robert Downey Jr.and Jack Lemmon) is excellent and there are some rich performances on display. The film is both epic and intimate in its feel. Short Cuts is a masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time.

I was with you for well over two hours of running time. But then it hit a couple false, melodramatic notes right at the end that, for me, knocked it out of 10/10 territory at the last moment. Perhaps that’s the fault of Raymond Carver: I don’t know how faithful this film is to the original stories.

Still a strong 9/10 though!
