Rifleman Tongue

what happened to tongue?

I can't remember offhand what happens to Tongue in the books but Cornwell wrote out some very minor characters that way, especially riflemen. They just die in the confusion of battle. The 30 or so riflemen he started out with in Sharpe's Eagle are cut down to just Sharpe, Harper and Hagman by the time of Waterloo - and Hagman is killed off.

Whos Tonge again? I forgot is he the guy with the 'Bandana' on his head?

reply

dont forget Harris as well, Harris and Hagman die side by side in Waterloo.

reply

True - I'd forgotten about Harris. But that's probably because his death isn't mentioned in the book - he goes the same way as Tongue.

Tongue's death is indeed mentioned in THE books but not Eagle, they mention it in Gold. for some reason they filmed the movies way out of order from the book and where the movies go Rifles, Eagle, Company, the books go Rifles, Gold, Eagle, Company (as best as I know)

Well, they thought Nigel Kneale, being a legend of British screen-writing would be the appropriate fellow to pen the story, seemingly aware that Nigel Kneale had a habit of not giving any regard to his source material. In his own words:

"I didn't use much of [the book]. I used the first ten pages, I think. Then I had an idea which would be more fun to do."

His idea of 'fun', of course, being stuff that makes no kind of historical sense. And Nigel Kneale, having such hight status, would never agree to re-write his material and would have been paid well in advance, so once the production team got the script they wouldn't have had much choice in the matter.

I suspect the problem is that you have too many paperclips up your nose

bernard cornwell was speaking at a book signing in ontario canada about a yr or so back and someone asked him why sharpes gold differed so much between book and film, he was quoted as saying "I'm not sure what the screenplay writers were on when they wrote that one but I sure wish i could get a bag of it" hehe

reply

So is Sharpe's Eagle the last film (not book) where the character of Rifleman Tongue is seen or mentioned?

reply

Yep I recently lucked out & got a hold of a collection of Sharpes episodes on VHS tapes for, like, $2. I put on Gold & after it was done I just sat there going "WHUT the HELL was THAT all about!!??"

reply

Cooper just disappears too. At least they had the decency to give Perkins a meaningful ending rather than just have him fade off.
