What a beautiful film

Truly touching without recourse to overt sentimentality, this is a wonderful portrait of the artist as a man in love.

I definitely agree. It wasn't the famous now a days thing love at first sight ( or should we call it lust at first sight?) It is truly wonderful! Hopkins and Winger are BEYOND MEASUREMENT!

A picture of a gentler, but no more forgiving, world. Wonderfully acted.

A nice and gentle reminder of the immense talents of Mr. Hopkins.

Amazingly I've just got around to seeing this film for the first time some 20 years after its release and I was totally blown away by it. I've seen lots of Anthony Hopkins' movies over the years but this was probably his strongest and most credible performance yet. He has played the middle aged repressed Englishman so many times in the past and this is the first time I've seen him in such a role where he really gives vent to his feelings.

There are several wonderfully touching scenes that are both heartwarming and heartbreaking in their sincerity. The scene with Harry where he finally admits how much he is in love with Joy and the scene in the attic with Douglas are astonishingly real. I was glad to see Edward Hardwicke with such a major role in a mainstream feature film, he is a fine actor of long standing who rarely receives the credit he deserves. Debra Winger was superb in her role as was Joseph Mazello as young Douglas.

An incredible film that I will doubtless watch many times, almost perfect.

This means something, this is important.
