this is a poor version of the film

despite it's popularity, it is not a faithful adaptation of the book. the 1987 and 1975 TV versions are better. I have not seen the 1975 version but it is said to be the most faithful to the novel. I have seen the 1987 version dozens of times. I remember seeing it at school in 1st grade shortly after it aired.

They are two different types of media.

The movie is absolutely lovely, and I do not care if it is not exactly like the (also) superb book.

The essence was captured, and that's what matters.

While it strays and adds a few scenes here or there, the 1993 version is perhaps the best (American) adaptation of the book. The 1949 is far from the book; a very odd film. And the 1987 film changes the relations of the characters drastically so that there is no familial relation between Mary and the Cravens. Not to mention the fact that in the 1987 version Mary is likable and pitiable at the beginning of the film; we do not see her harsh, "contrary" ways until she meets Colin. The 1993 version sticks very close to the feeling and characterizations of the original text and I still say it's the best.

The 1975 version is exactly like the book! However, it's also a mini series and stretches out over 3 or 4 hours. For a feature-length film, the 1993 version does an amazing job!

I agree - The 1987 version is the worst. It looses the entire point of the book. All the themes are discarded for silly plot contrivances. Why would we ever need to know what happens to everyone when they all grow up? That's not what the story is about. And the exposition!!! It alone is enough to make my head swim! There was no mystery and no suspense. Martha just blurts everything out in one moment.

The 1993 version just gets it right...

Sorry, it looks like you're in the minority here. This version is one of my favorite movies in general, and certainly my favorite of the book. Sure, it deviates from the plot, but like others have said, books and films are two different mediums, and what I like about this version is how completely it creates a magical, haunting ghost story, which is really the essence of the book. The cinematography is brilliant, and everything is so well-executed.

However, if the 1987 version is your favorite, far be it for me to say otherwise. You stick to your guns.

Just because something is faithful it does not mean it's good! This movie is well scripted, well shot, and brilliantly acted. There is nothing actually bad you can say about this movie.

Well said! I too thought it was wonderful.
