I would guess it was in the mid to late 1800's due to the ship docking at Liverpool, which was a popular port in that time, and the horse drawn carriages were popular then as well. But Mary said her father was never around due to military action, so that leads me to believe this was WWI time, although I don't know much about Indian wars in the 19th century!

I believe it's set around the turn of the 20th century. The book was first published in 1909, and the costumes look appropriate to that era so I don't think they changed it for the movie.
