"Knights of the South Bronx" (2005), starring Ted Danson (2006 Screen Actors Guild nomination in the "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries" category), will likely be re-aired by the Arts & Entertainment channel.

"Dangerous Moves", a French chess movie that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in the 80's, is a film that you'd either love or hate. Personally, I liked it because of the Cold War parallels. But if you have never heard of the Cold War or not know much about it, you might find it pretty boring.

Speaking of Cold War related films, though, I'd still say that the best one is "Good Night, and Good Luck.". Other good ones are "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" and "The Iron Giant" (yes, it's Cold War related).

Anyway, I think "Searching for Bobby Fischer" is one of the best movies ever made. It ranks a very high number 19 in my list of top films. Actually, I watched it in the same summer that I watched "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", which also ranked very high in my list. After watching E.T., I thought it was going to be the best film that I'd see that summer. That is, until I saw "Searching for Bobby Fischer". What an absolutely brilliant film!

it's not a chess movie but is in the same vein of inspiration and has lawrence fishburne in a similiar role. Akeelah and the Bee. Very very good movie. If you liked searching for bobby fischer what that too.

You might be interested in Fresh (1994) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/ . Samuel L. Jackson's character (Fresh's father) devotes his life to playing the same park chess as depicted in Searching for Bobby Fischer, and teaches his son the brutal strategies of the game. Chess isn't the main story line, but it's an essential part of it.

Luzhin Defense but it is not accurate to the true chess world. Searching for Bobby Fischer is the ultimate chess movie.

Hi,
I am a chessplayer myself and i can recommend 2 other films for you. Firstly 'Luzhin's Defence' is excellent (unsure if spelt correctly!), and secondly the 'Game Over' DVD of Garry Kasparov. This one is more of a documenatry about the Man - Machine match against Deep Blue, but if you are interested it is well filmed and thought-provoking.
Hope this helps

Another great chess film is Guy Ritchie's Revolver.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365686/

Highly under rated. It's more about how to play an opponent, and has some deeper meanings if you watch and listen carefully.

Rent it first or d/l it off the net as there is currently no Region 1 DVD available. This film is not for everyone, even though I loved it.

A bit of warning. If you are expecting the same kind of comedy gangster style of his earlier films like "Snatch & Lock Stock.." you will be disapointed. I comend Ritchie for trying to do something different, even if it wasn't a huge success.

Must be seen twice to comprehend what Ritchie and the story has to say.

Well, it's not a movie, but the Broadway play, CHESS, is excellent! If you liked the movie you may really enjoy the play/musical. You can still get the CD of he songs. It includes a Fischer-like character as well, called The American.
