Was 'The Beast' an imagination?

When the boys see the beast through the fence and when they try to get the ball back they see this huge gorilla dog. but when benny goes over the fence and the chase starts, there's a normal size dog. so was this big dog their imagination, or too much sun?

it is what they imagined it to be.because as we seen he really wasnt that big monster...think about like say going to camp as a kid and you hear a scary story of some killer in the woods....every sound you hear or if you see a shadow you will think that it was that killer..

Every small town has a house that seems frightening and mystical. In every small town with "that" house, there is a dog in the yard that terrifies every kid who walks past the yard.

It could have been a teacup poodle and every kid who saw it would have imagined it to be the largest dog in the world. I think the size of the dog shown in the scene you're mentioning wasn't so much the size of the dog but the size of the fear kids feel when confronted with having to stand up to the dog.

It was what they thought they saw because they only saw shadows and heard his echoing growls. He also wasn't seen quickly enough so in their minds they thought he was this big monster. That was the idea: To the kids, he was this scary legend, when in reality, he wasn't so tough.

I actually thought one of the early scenes was kind of messed up because the first few times Smalls goes near the fence he's terrified because he hears something growling, but then when Rodriguez hits the homer, he climbs right to the top of the fence and nothing happens... The kids all freak out and pull him down and explain it to him and tell him to creep closer to the fence...then he hears the beast again... didn't make sense

No respect you make me sick!! You give a aspirin a headache!!!

Yes, it was folklore. Things were dramatized by the kids. It was a story sacred to them. good point

It was that way just to make him seem like he was worse than he really was. It was funny to see a big fake head attacking the ball. I was laughing at it. It's like your seeing it through their eyes, this monster of a dog when he wasn't as big as they saw him.

Mertle was the Beast. He went Beast Mode on those boys.
