Was Bill?

The biggest jerk in movie history? The guy was an awful human being. No way Smalls mom would have been in to him

reply

I don't think he was an awful human being but I do think he was pretty unfriendly towards Scotty for no reason. I know he wasn't supposed to like kids but if you're going to be with a woman that has a son, then that's what you get. He was a good kid. I'm not sure why he would have a problem with him.

reply

I always thought this... they didn't look a happy family unit did they? I always thought he loved giving scotty a black eye... also killed him after what happened to his babe ruth ball

reply

He was a nasty twat!

reply

I don't think it's like that at all. I think he was just REALLY awkward around Scotty...it seems like they didn't have much interaction before the marriage happened to the point where there were comfortable and then BOOM they have to live together. It's even more awkward when Bill is jock, sports type of guy and Scotty was a science nerd....they had nothing in common and probably couldn't connect well because of it.

If he were a horrible person he would've abused Scotty either verbally or physically which he did not.

reply

He wouldn't even crack the top 300 biggest movie jerks. It's like the poster above me mentioned, it is not like Bill was being deliberately rude to Smalls, much less abusive. He felt as awkward about the whole situation as Smalls did, and the two of them simply needed some time to adjust (that's what eventually happened at the end).

You want something corny? You got it!

reply

Wow I think you all are over thinking it. I mean picture yourself dating a woman and then being a father to a kid that isn't your child. It's all natural to have a distant relationship, and their relationship wasn't THAT distant.

reply

Idk, I felt like the step dad made no effort to get to know him. Not saying that they should've been close right off the bat (lol pun not intended), but the mom basically had to tell him to play catch with him. Yeah he was busy but at least Smalls was trying to make and effort but he basically shot him down. I know it must've been awkward but still

reply

He was just unfriendly stepfather, not an awful human being. If he was my stepfather, I wouldn't care about him a bit, but I wouldn't hate him either.

reply

He's about as good as a step-father as you're going to get. It's not his kid. He's doing his best but he'll always be distant. Sure, sometimes you get a connection with a step-dad, but everyone I've ever known that has a step dad refers to them by their first name. Never "Dad" unless the new dad came into the picture before they could even talk and the birth father was no-where to be found.
I have friend who calls her step-dad "dad" but it's because her biological father was a jackass who skipped town and was never seen again. No original connection so her step-dad is her real dad as far as she's concerned.

I don’t think he was a jerk, but I did wonder if he threw that ball at Scotty’s eye on purpose. In fact I’m sure he did. He knew there was only one way for Smalls to learn to play catch, which was to not be afraid of the ball and use your glove as a tool. The way Bill dialed in that 3rd throw, he knew where it was going.
