Overrated

I noticed that you're not a fan of Hoosiers either. I would say that Hoosiers is the better of the two. But "overrated" I think is too strong for either, when you say something like Rudy is among the most overrated "of all time." It's not like these films were up for the Oscar for "Best Film." I don't think anyone has heaped THAT much praise on them...! They're decent and despite their flaws, certainly watchable.

Rudy bugs me because I can spot deficiencies, having lived near ND in those years. For example, the marching band uniforms are all wrong for 1975. (That's what happens when the producers don't go all-out on the budget, while in that example it probably wasn't at all practical -- yet the use of '90s actual gameday footage, like halftime, is too obvious.) Fathers Ted & Ned looked significantly younger in '75 for that matter, though it's a minor point. More importantly, the scene with the players turning in their jerseys to Devine if Rudy wouldn't be playing was pure fiction, as we know -- Coach Devine would never have stood for that.

As far as Ruettiger himself, naturally he's going to try to profit from all of this as much as possible -- that's the American Way...! Your opinion of his walk-on experience is just that -- your opinion. But the fact remains that he was able to parlay the thing into a major movie, and that's something very few people accomplish.

Dear sir who doesn't know what he Is talking. I would like to say that Rudy is a great and amazing movie about an individual who never stopped working hard. He had more heart then anyone could ever imagine and was dedicated and determined to achieve his life long dream to step out on that field. How many people can you say played D1 and got to play a single play on such a prestigious team. It wasn't easy and he obviously had an un fair advantage. I also would like to say who cares where you grew up south bend doesn't mean anything I'm sorry to say but you're stupid.

After watching this movie for the first time, I would have strongly disagreed with your claim that the movie was "overly sentimental and cheesey". Although I normally don't enjoy watching sports or movies about sports, Rudy became one of my top five favorite movies.
Then I decided to research this movie on the internet. I was shocked to learn how many of the scenes were complete fiction, or had been modified from what really happened. That caused me to change my opinion about this movie and also think it is overrated. In fact, the only thing that I still like about this movie is the music.

Yes, I have been saying the same thing about this movie for years. For all the build up, the end scene is just not satisfying. There is just not enough payoff here. Now it's a sweet little story but he got into the game for a brief couple of moments and that was that. Look at the original "ROCKY". The end fight is so dramatic and well put together by the end of the movie the audience is emotionally drained We are talking movies here, and in movies you need a bigger payoff than RUDY gives us. I know this movie has it's fans and it's a sweet little movie, like a TV movie, and that's really about all it is.

..1. movies are meant to entertain, and Rudy does that so well.

..It's a more than a typical sports movie. It's about going after your dreams no matter what anyone says, when everyone around says you will never be anything. And so many can relate to this movie and that powerful message.

..2. who cares if the movie is not accurate, than go interview bitter Joe Montanna lol ..if people want the real life story about anything, they will watch a boring documentary about it. Again, movies are meant to enteratin us, mainly sports movies like this, and this is one of the best sports movies, period.

..this is a touching powerful moving movie. never gets old. if anything, this movie is under rated.

It's the classic underdog story. He had a lot of strikes against him and yet did something that is kind of amazing. How many guys end up on the ND football field per year? About 50 (?) out of 2 million guys that age in the USA? And then he got to play? Even a quick, insignificant play is pretty amazing.

But I see your point..and something that kind of annoys me is the fact that the movie so blatantly did not practice what it preached. Did they pluck an unknown out of obscurity? Nope. They got some well connected, nepotism MF'er to portray the lead. Patty Duke's son.

You're overrated

Yeah, it’s a little sappy, and has the feel of a Lifetime channel / Disney channel flick

But not a bad movie.
