Stealing

Why did she steal all the stuff from the store? And what did she do with the stuff? It looked like she dumped it some place but I wasn't sure what that place was.

Ruby is irritated because life is so difficult. She works hard for very little money. So she steals the merchandise and feels guilty afterwards, because she knows it isn't right to steal.

She dumps the merchandise in one of those clothing charity bins -- a very good solution. She doesn't keep it, but can you imagine if she confessed her crimes and was arrested? And hopefully the items will go to people who really need them.

I love how Ruby is not perfect (she steals the merchandise, she's not honest with the men in her life) but is basically a good person. Like a real person.

I loved how she said "Why slave your life out, when you can just take?" - so true for anyone who has ever struggled or never fully appreciated and that was certainly the case for Ruby.

"You know mom, I'm a big fan of this asprin... can't believe we give it to children."

Watching this movie again recently, I realize that Ruby steals in reaction to Ricky's treatment of her. Remember when he gives her a gift after they first spend the night together? When she goes to his place the second time, she notices that he has a dresser drawer full of "gifts" tied up with ribbons, apparently to give to the girls he sleeps with. Immediately after this she does her shoplifting, but she realizes that she can't be sleazy like Ricky.
