Well I really liked it, am I the only one?

Ok I am a bit biased here being a massive fan of pretty much all of Oldmans work, but come on this is a good movie isn't it? I too wasnt sure about the Jazz score initially but when I watched it a second time I really couldnt imagine anything else working. The acting was great all round I thought, and I really really loved the ending. I once read in a filmaking book that if a movie has a great ending the audience will be very forgiving even if the rest of the movie was crap. Now I don't think this movie was crap by any means, quite the contary but I must admit that for me at least the ending turned an average movie in to good/great movie. Having said that I am a bit of a sucker for sad endings. Anyways just my thoughts. Anyone think the same?

You're not :]. It's one of my favorites, too. I've been already quite spoiled with my longtime interest in movies when I first saw that one, but it really made me go "wow!, this is really something". Hard to compare, but when it comes to bloody noir cocktail it easily beats Tarantino or early works of Coen brothers. And by the way, Oldman's performance is simply stunning.

im a HUGE fan of Oldman's work, and I have to say this is one of my favourite of his films. also being a fan of good old film noir, this film for me had almost everything, a great soundtrack, eexposing raw camerawork that exposes a slice of the sleazy gritty Noir York world. and the ending still brings tears to my eyes.

Come on folks ...
This movie is decent, but 9/10? Save 'em for Bogart and Hitchcock. I picked this one up the other day, having heard about it before, but I was left mildly disappointed. Nothing wrong with it really, it's an okay flick in the noir tradition, but nothing special either. Lena Olin is pretty good, and I really liked the jazzy soundtrack. The ending was sad and touching, but what else could we expect? The only thing worse would have been to have Natalie walk back in at the end, and for a second I was afraid it was going to happen!
A tiny notch above average ... 6/10 in my books.

My god, Bogart. Most over-rated actor in history. Good film.

nope, one of the best or maybe even the best actor of all times. what movies have you seen him in?

reply

Bogart is not overrated.

I could watch this GREAT movie over and over and never get tired of it.

You are not alone! This movie is great, powerful performances (especially Oldman - his best?), with a darkly comic edge. I salute your good taste!
