Why is Japanese culture so complicated?

Too many subtleties and posturing.

Interesting, because I do distinctly recall on The Man in a High Castle, how the antique shop owner tells the Japanese couple, when they use expressions, like buddy, dude or mate in an intensified voice it is to be taken as an offense, yet using expressions, like "hey, man" in a friendly manner is a term of endearment, though it should be the other way around, and that was the local culture, that still exists in America.

All cultures are complicated. Foreigners find your culture complicated; you don't only because you've grown up in it, so it's all second nature to you. There are probably a hundred rules that you follow every day without even knowing you're doing it.
