Iago

Why does Iago turn into a good guy? It's been years since I last watched this movie.

If I recall correctly, at first it's for his own selfish reasons. His master failed and he wants to live in castle and be protected. At the end though, after spending time with the group, he begins to like Aladdin and Co. and has a change of heart and saves the day. He's still not a completely loyal to Aladdin though and will turn on them to suit his purposes. (If you've seen Farscape, he reminds me of Rygel.)

Iago turning good and kissing up to Aladdin et al was for me the biggest problem of the movie (I had several others too). In the first movie he a perfectively legitimate bad guy, was loyal to Jafar and also well-treated by him, e.g. he got to stuff crackers down the sultan's throat, and hated kissing up to the Sultan and Jasmine - so I don't understand why he ultimately pursues this course.

What he did in the second one I thought was completely inconsistent and implausible. Jafar does not mistreat Iago, in fact the reverse; Iago dumps Jafar down a well, Jafar nonetheless forgives Iago, yet Iago betrays Jafar two more times (freeing the captives and finally murdering in him by kicking his lamp into the lava). In a way, then, Iago _is_ still evil - towards Jafar.

In other words, "why does Iago turn good" IMO is a very good question - I cannot come up with a good answer, although selfishness (above) sounds more plausable than other alternatives.
