Better than 'King of Thieves'. Hell, only decent Disney sequel.

Multiple reasons:

1) it still features Jafar, the villain in the third movie was hardly menacing at all.
2) builds a story around all the original characters, and the new characters that were introduced played a small part. Abis Mal is a passable new character imo, redeemed by the comedy he brings with the interactions with jafar and the fulfillment of his wishes.
3) the characters are still likeable, in the third they aren't at all. Also, the characters in the third changed in nature considerably, Aladdin turned into your run in the mill hero and Iago's good nature has disappeared completely. Not to mention the horrible voice-acting in the third.
4) the animation is better( though not on par with the original obv.)
5) features a good song (Let's forget about Love), contrary to the third.

I rest my case.

This doesn't mean I'm blind to this one's flaws, it's WAY too short (69min, omg) and of course Robin Williams is missed (though I don't think Dan did a bad job).

I disagree. This only has one good song "nothing in the world quite like a friend", the animation looks horrible and Iago and Abis Mal are really irritating. Loved climax though.

The music was absolutely horrible and forgettable. The music in the third movie is much more memorable, and you don't have to hear Iago sing for incredible amounts of time.

"The Return of Jafar" feels too much like a longer episode of the TV series (which I enjoy, I'm not bashing the TV series), but this movie feels like it was written over a weekend.

On the note about the music I enjoyed "Forget Above Love" and "Nothing in the World Quite Like a Friend" but I enjoyed "Party in Agrobah", "Father & Son", "Welcome to the 40 Thieves" and "In or Out" from the 3rd film much better.

I think it was originaly written as a pilot for the series but not shown. It explains things in the series that made no sence ie the Genie being back, and the fact that Iago was suddenly on the good side.

Well, I felt that the sequel was, if not the best, then at least one of the few that actually was necessary, as the first Aladdin did kinda leave room for a sequel.

I mean, despite Genie saying that he had sent Iago and Jafar to the Cave of Wonders, he shouldn't have sent them there, as it doesn't even exist anymore (Abu pretty much destroyed it when he touched the Ruby). Therefore, they would have been buried under sand, and it would have only been a matter of time before they emerged again.

Which is what happened
It was an alright sequel, I prefer the songs in the third movie, I liked the second movie for Iago being a fave of mine
Abis mal? He's more funny in the series, but man was he screwed here, Jafar is such a wish cheater.
Second Rate was very enjoyable.

reply

Agreed! I really enjoyed this sequel and prefer it over King of Thieves. Though, I haven't seen the third in a long time, maybe I will re-visit it. But yeah, I enjoyed the sequel. I really like Jaffar as a villain and I thought the songs were catchy, "Forget about love", "Quite like a friend", "Second Rate". It was a fun movie. Dan was good as geenie, but nothing beats Robin

I actually had only seen King of Thieves as a child, I didn't see the first two until much later, about 14?

There were quite a few Disney classics I missed back then (they weren't in my VHS collection or my friends', and I didn't see them at the cinema :P) but I've watched many of them since and I still love them / appreciate them / can see how I would have loved them as a child.

I loved the original 92 Aladdin, but Return of Jafar definitely falls short. There is something off about the animation, some of the voices are different, and I didn't find any of the songs memorable. The detail and depth of the backgrounds is lacking too. As someone explained earlier, if it was originally intended to be an episode for the TV version, that makes sense, because it has that feel to it.

Actually, now that I think of it, I think I did watch Return of Jafar in class in elementary school... but I couldn't have liked it too much at the time if I can't remember what I thought of it?

reply

Sorry, but I don't think this one is decent at all. I felt bored watching it. The only good thing about it was the song "Forget About Love", that was a great song.

I think the ony good sequel is "The Lion King 1½" or what ever it's called. The one where Timon & Pumbaa tells the story from their perspective.
That one was really good and funny, I enjoyed it.

The premise was good, IMO. Aladdin deals with an evil genie. Jafar is getting revenge. Aladdin is adjusting to palace life. I like that. But it just could have been done better. I enjoy watching the two sequels though. They're good movies.
