The US was a neutral country, and it was a European war. They weren't "late" at all.

reply

Uh, that's up for debate, geesuz. Myself, being Jewish with relatives that were there would heartily disagree with you. Do you really think our "real" war was just with the Japanese solely because of Pearl Harbor, and that the European theater wasn't our "real" war? FDR would have disgreed with you. Do you really think Hitler would have left America alone? Was Churchill's relationship with Roosevelt a neutral one? You think 1944 wasn't late? What of our military alliances with Great Britain after World War I which were pro-England and anti-Germany. Survivors of the blitz would have disagreed with you, that's for certain.

it was the congress at the time from what i remember from school, they had an isolationist policy because of the great depression

I doubt that US military was capable of fighting Germany in France in 1942 or 1943. Germans would have diverted forces from the East and destroyed US/British forces. Without Stalingrad/Kursk there would have been no landing in Normandy

reply

first of all, it is rather difficult, if not impossible to hypothesize on such an outcome. German army was not that invincible at the time you mention, in fact, by mid 42 some german army officers felt the war was going against them.
The german army in soviet russia was taking heavy losses with stalingrad & the seige of leningrad. The reason why hitler sent his army there was mainly for energy sources needed desperately to continue the war.
His army was defeated in north africa at the battle of alamein & that was just the british forces with some australians. The German army at its height in power could not invade Britain, so could they have prevented the landing in normandy? Maybe, maybe not, there would've been other options & dont forget the americans were also advancing from the south, through Italy.
To cut a long story short, the germans wouldn't have destroyed US/british forces at that time. IF germany hadnt invaded the soviet union is another story altogether.

Or in the immortal words of Corporal Jones to the American Colonel, "Is it true that the only thing you Yanks charged in the last war was the interest on the money you lent us?"...

Ever hear of Chateau Thierry?

I certainly have. A great victory among many, won by men with the courage of Lions. As an American you probably didn't get the reference, sorry about that, the quote comes from a series called "Dad's Army" and in Britain it is a very famous and quite affectionate play on the tradition of friendship and co-operation between the British and US armed forces. The episode in question mercilessly rips into the stereotypes of both American and British behaviour in World War 2 and is considered one of the highpoints of British comedy. Highly recommended if you like the style.

Big fan of the Pythons, "Are You Being Served", and Benny Hill.

The best Benny Bit: Benny " You know Bob, that pie your mother sent us was just right." Bob: "What do you mean 'just right'"? Benny: "Well if it was any worse we couldn't have eaten it, and if it was any better she wouldn't have given to us."

Yeah, they're all great. One thing I didn't realise until I got talking to some friends at work who come from the US was how out there they considered Benny Hill. We in Britain and Ireland thought of Benny as cheeky "end of the pier" type comedy which was originally shown on TV around 8:00pm as family entertainment. The guys were more than a little shocked by that.
