The Four Catergories

To me, animated films are placed into four catergories:

Disney - The Walt Disney Classics, can never be forgotten because they are always refered to when talking about animation. Unfortunatley the last good Disney film was 'The Lion King' (Although I do have a thing for Treasure Planet). My all time favourites include "Bambi" "Lady and the Tramp" "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "The Fox and The Hound"

Anime - Animated films made in Japan. These films incorporate a much more mature and mystical feel to animation. My favourites include "Grave Of The Fireflies," "The End Of Evangelion," "Vampire Hunter D", "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Howls Moving Castle"

Pixar - The most recent form of Animation are computer generated images, which is far more cost effective. However this is the only one of my catergories that I dislike. To me Pixar films are too cheesy, and lack true emotional depth. Also the visuals simply don't appeal to me like regular animation. The only one I like is "Toy Story"

Other - Don't be fooled by the name of this catergory. These films play a huge role, especially for me. They are often ridiculously good, but get very little attention, which makes them even more special. The film that I'm posting this message on 'The Princess and the Goblin' (Which regretably I've never seen) fits in this catergory, as does some of my favourite films "The Land Before Time", "Flight Of Dragons" "An American Tale" and "Watership Down"

Who else is a big Animation fan, on varied formats? Whats your opinion?

I agree with your catagories. I just wish that Disney and Pixar didn't swallow up all the good ones.

I do love disney movies though...like, The Great Mouse Detective and The Rescuers, and 101 Dalmations that sort of thing..

Anime: Vamp. Hunter D, Howl's Moving Castle, Flying Castle, and The Cat Returns...I'm a fan of that guy, starts with an M...mya-somthing maybe. I saw an anime on Sci-Fi, something to do with a doctor and this corporation modifying people's DNA and like, creating super-humans, for example an amazing pianist, and those superhumans were overtaking the Olympics...but then they would get horribly sick and die...that was a good one. But I don't watch them all that much.

Pixar: I thought they were new and fresh when I was younger and the whole, 3D effect that was going on, now I'm bored with it because EVERYTHING is digitally animated, I miss the good style. But, how many people would want things to go backward...

Other: Rockadoodle, Swan Princess (I don't know if that was a major company or not, but I always considered it underappreciated) Thumbalina, Secret of NIMH, Happily Ever After....I grew up with those movies, and I watched them and rewatched them, OH! The Pumpkin Tree, it was made by Nickolodeon, but my rental place had a copy and every Halloween I rented that movie. I miss the "other" catagory...so hard to find now.

Eh, thats my two cents anyways.

I agree with your categories as well...Disney had its peak in the 90s, and now all they do is make sequels of the classics, or a Pixar movie. I have to admit, I do enjoy the Pixar movies (I thought Wall-E was so cute), but I miss the classic animation with a real good story. I hope the new Disney movie (with the first black princess, woohoo!) is good.

I also think that the "other" category is really important. For a while, Don Bluth filme were a really good Disney competitor...actually, I'm pretty sure he worked for disney at one point...but his movies seemed to die out after a while...There were so many movies my mother came across when I was little..the most random, obscure cartoons, but I loved them!! The Iron Giant, Once Upon a Forest, Heidi's Song, The Wind in the Willows (not the disney version), Charlotte's Web, Rikki Tikki Tavi, The Brave Little Toaster, Rock-a-Doodle, this random anime version of The Wizard of Oz from like 1982, all those Peanuts movies, love the Peanuts...I could go on and on!!

I'm a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki...his animation is absolutely breathtaking, so detailed, you can tell he studied photography. I like every movie I've seen so far, my favorites being Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Castle in the Sky. Saw Princess Mononoke recently and that wasn't really my favorite...a little too graphic for me...heads flyin off and whatnot, lol.

::sigh::...glad to know other people pay close attention to animation too, lol.
