Rare movie depicting Black cowboys

No matter what one thinks of the quality of the script or actors/actresses, Van Peeples (and his daddy) should be commended for this movie depicting Black men in POSITIVE roles. It continues to amaze me how ignorant Whites and Blacks are regarding the impact of Blacks in the U.S. (and how ignorant they CHOOSE to remain)!

I've been looking for cinematic depictions of African-Americans in the Old West and this film looks pretty interesting. It amazes ME how so much of the history of Blacks in the Old West is ignored or overlooked. It is literally a "gold mine" waiting to be discovered!

A paperback book I found is a gold mine of "History of the Negro Cowboy" which was published sometime in the 1960's I believe. Several ocurrences in "Lonesome Dove" came from this book including Danny Glover's part of taking the money to the bank and one cowboy bringing the other one home to be buried. Only difference was that it was a black man bringing home his white boss to be buried in Texas. My copy of the book is currently in storage.

Quite good for a movie directed by an inexperienced director as in Sidney Poitier. He had the weird experience of directing Blacks who had been raised in Mexico. All those extras were descendants of Black escaped slaves and did not speak English for the most part.Mexico has a law that 51% of a movie crew that is filmed in Mexico must be Mexican citizens. I also feel that Black history is overlooked in our history as is Native American history. Both seem to be depicted in a negative light.

A black western is rare indeed.

Its that man again!!

All of these men were deserters except father time, who was a crooked gambler. Positive hardly. They had good and bad about them, like any human. That's what makes the movie so good. About the only principal character was papa Joe, and he traded his daughter for a poker game lol.
