The Syndrome

Does any one know the name of the syndrome that causes a parent to do this type of thing? Or that makes a parent force their child to participate in activities for the parents benefit? I know they are trying to live vicariously through their children but I am looking for the name of the syndrome.

Maunchausen (sp?) syndrome is when a parent (usually a mother)will do anything to get their child hurt of sick just so they can fill the psychological need of being there and taking care of the child. They will even go as far as poisoning their child so that sypmtoms develop and hospitalization is required. Worse things also happen. Sick stuff. I have never seen this movie, but after reading about it, it doesn't seem that extreme. Maunchausen is basically medical based.

Muchausen Syndrome is when an idividual "fakes" an illness to receive sympathy. As an example, an individual will tell family, friends and co-workers they have cancer, and begin to lose weight, avoid sunlight to make their skin look pale, and go so far as to shave their heads to imitate the result of chemo-therapy. Munchausen by proxy is the result of an individual purposefully trying to make someone else sick (eg: mother poisoning a child to mimick illness), so as to either gain sympathy, or be seen as the saving grace or angel in the situation. Nurses and doctors have also fallen into the pattern so that they might gain notoriety for saving a patient, or recognizing an illness that no one else may notice.

Although it isn't clinically recognized, many people refer to being a stage-parent as "Svengali Syndrome". Svengali referring to the series of films thoughout the years in which the main character, Svengali, hypnotizing an individual to do whatever he desired. Svengali Syndrome refers to a parent who pushes their child to participate and excel in activities - such as cheerleading, football, acting, singing and the like.
