I guess I'm not getting it

I remember when this movie came out, it was highly regarded, was nominated for a slew of Oscars, and in looking things up, I see that it won three.

I finally, after all these years, decided to take the time to watch this movie, and now that I have, I came away thinking that it was kind of an odd movie, and I don't quite get all of the praise it received.

I can acknowledge the performances of Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin, but otherwise it just seemed like there was a lot that wasn't fully developed or explained, and it seemed like a fairly peculiar story overall.
