So, she likes the guy who took advantage of her...

So, she likes the guy who took advantage of Ada. I mean she falls in love with the guy who "gropes" her as one poster says. He whores her out for her love of the piano. I thought he was being pretty rotten to her. I guess she likes the kinkiness of it all.

Her husband was so clueless he didn't know what was going on until it was shoved in his face. But he seemed to be the good guy until (spoiler) he cut off her finger. Also locking her up in her house wasn't cool.

The little girl took the husbands side. She finked out her mother.

Ada cheated on her husband.

Who was there to really like in this movie? Although it kept my attention, I usually want to like at least one person.

I was sorry for the daughter', who was placed in an awful position by by her mother, being forced to act as a go between with her lover. i didn't blame her for telling her stepfather, it was an intolerabel strain to place on a child.

The whole arrangement was skeevy, no doubt, but I think people root for Ada and Baine's union because he never actually did force her. As creepy as it was, he always asked permission while negotiating. Of course, Ada first seemed to agree because he had her piano, and she was desperate to play it and eventually earn it back. I also agree that she started to like the kinkness of it, and somewhere along the way, she truly fell for him.

I'm not particularly over the moon about any character, except Flora is a hoot. When I was younger, I actually did root for Ada and Baines. I was glad she ended up with him, was learning to talk again, and a prosthetic finger was working out for her. I think I used to be more of a romantic or at least an idealist, where for the circumstance, things turned out well. Now I am just more relieved I didn't grow up in that time period with such a lot in life because... yikes.

omg. Oblaidon. I can only hope you are not attempting a relationship with another person. So many dynamics and layers, peeled back here in this poignant STORY....and you missed them all. Gawd help you.

At least Ada had a say in the bargain between herself and Baines. Her dad just sold her to Alistair!

She fell for the man that understood her. Her husband could never understand her and Baines gave her much needed attention. He was gentle but passionate. He took them to the beach and truly enjoyed the music and the happiness it brought her. He gave 60 acres of valuable land for the piano or more to the point, for Ada. He was thoughtful - getting the piano tuned. They both were lonely.

When Ada starts playing upbeat, fun music she breaks up the mood of the scene and Baines backs off. She also hurts him by holding hands with her husband at the play.

He gave the piano back to her out of love before it became payment for actual sex.

So there's more to it than just taking advantage of her.
