She was a prodigy in acting!! She won it very deservedly, but wasn't allowed to see the film in its entirity for obvious reasons. She was amazing. also great in A Walk on the Moon when she was pubescent.

I actually think this was a more difficult role than the one Holly Hunter played. It's a very unsettling character. You're never quite sure how much she understands, whether she's a pathological liar, how much Hunter has psychologically damaged her. I think she's by far the most complicated character in the movie.

She was very natural and had none of the fake expressions and intonations that most kid actors use.

The Piano is a family favorite in my household but it's one that I held out watching for 20years. It just didn't interest me. Family member found the BLUERAY in the library and now I've watched it. Just got done watching it. My first impression is, that since she has no lines, no script or dialogue, as an actress her performance was magnificent. An achievement. Her character was not mute by birth but made so at a young age by accident. That surprised me, I've only seen bits and pieces over the years, now the whole movie. I am impressed. Holly Hunter appears to be the real piano player to, thats her playing, it's not dubbed or faked, most impressive skill set and a beautiful women.

Anna Paquin is the reason that the film does not reach up to 10/10. Nevertheless, it's one of the best movies ever made.

I agree. She acted reasonably well, but did not seem authentic, somehow. Her accent was appalling.

reply

Surely you are not being serious right? Fun fact: She was born to a Kiwi mom and had lived in NZ since she was four. It was practically her native tongue.

Her character is Scottish.

I thought she did quite well, much better than she did after The Piano.
I recall that year well.
Poor Emma Thompson. EVERYONE thought she was going to win.

reply

it's her best performance to date

so many movies, so little time

She knew how to fear, cry, speak well and act, and she was only 11.

I wonder if she has since seen it. Heard her mother banned her from seeing it when she was a kid due to content.
