Guy that stares at Denzel in the library.

I am not understanding that scene. Was the guy staring at him because he was eating food in a library or was he cruising him? It seemed like an odd interaction.

reply

No. It was cause he didn't like black people. That's why he defends Andy from the evil librarian. Cause now he knows what it's like to be discriminated against. It's arguably the worst scene in the movie. Way to on the nose.

reply

That would make sense I guess. He felt discriminated against and then decided to represent Andrew. I agree - it was a scene that was not executed well. And not very believable. This racist guy is going to give Denzel the stare down in a public place...in Philadelphia of all places.

reply

It's the worst scene because it's so poorly done. I agree with you but the scene is presented as if they're staring at him because he's eating noisily.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

Thanks for clearing it up I thought it might have to do with him eating in the library. To think of all places a white Anglo man in Philadelphia giving him the stare down.

reply

Ya, I was confused too....I always thought it was because he was eating!!! I wanted to smack that guy anyway, just the way he looked at Denzel!!!!

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!

I actually think it's both - he's staring at him because he's eating in the library AND because he's black, and my thought is in his head he's saying "Oh, another uncouth black person" and stares at him angrily. If Denzel was not eating, and was just black, he probably wouldn't have stared at him, likewise if Denzel was white, and eating, he probably would not have gotten a stare either. Or he may have gotten a brief stare but not a long angry one maybe.

I think you nailed it.

reply

Correct.

reply

That's why i don't understand how denzel's character was so against gay people you would think he would stand up for that sort of thing being black and looked down on by white people.

reply

Minorities are amongst the most prejudiced in society, homophobia is rife in the black community.

reply

Holy *beep* ,i had no idea that he felt discriminated against at that scene.

You have to remember this film was made in 1992. Only 30 years before Jim Crow laws still existed and black people couldn't sit at white diners. There was still a lot of racial tension during this time. Just 1 year later Rodney King would be brutally beaten by 5 cops and the L.A. Riots would kick off.

How I saw the scene. The man probably started hating on him when was eating but for also being black. Then when he approached Andy and encouraged him the private room, he probably knew from his looks he was gay/had aids due to the book he gave him. When he questioned andy if he would feel more comfortable in a private room then Andy returned the question. Then the lawyer talked nice to Andy and the gentleman thought not only was he black, but he was gay. That's when they started to work on his case together.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

reply

That was KKK look; but when I watched this movie long time ago I thought it was because of eating in the library.

reply

I'd say mainly it was because that man was a racist. IMO, it was karma for Joe Miller, so he'd know (or rather, be reminded of) what it's like to be a victim of discrimination/prejudice. Because of the earlier way he had behaved about Andy being gay and having AIDS when he (Andy) visited him at his office.

This movie is full of strange filmmaking/character touches.
