Any other capoera movies?

Does anybody know any other action/martial art movies that use capoera as a main fighting style? I've been looking for ages and all I've found was training videos. Any brazilian movies that didn't get attention in us maybe, or something along those lines?

As far as I know there's a capoeira movie with Mestre Nestor Capoeira as the main character. I think it's in brazillian and I dont remember the name, but it should be pretty easy to find the name if you're interested.

Other then that I dont really think there's any movies that uses capoeira as the main fighting style. Wesley Snipes is a pretty skilled capoeirista which sometimes shines through in his movies, and you see capoeira being used in 1 or 2 scenes in a lot of movies, Oceans Twelve for example.

Hope that helped.

Okay, the Mestre Nestor movies is actually on IMDB - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0188522/

That guy was also in "Only The Strong." His name is Ceasar, and he's the one who squares off with Amein at the beginning of the movie.

Tom Yum Goong (the unofficial Ong-Bak 2 and Greatest Martial Arts Film Evur!) has a Capoeira practioner in it, who is supposed to be one of the most famous in the world. He has one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen with Tony Jaa that goes on for a good 5-6 minutes, a must-see. :-)

reply

I agree with Jon-630. Tom Yum Goong is definitely a must see if you want to see some Capoeira. Thai Boxing vs Capoeira ---> what a match!!!

reply

The capoeirista in the unoffical Ong-Bak sequel is called Lateef Crowder and he actually got injured filming that scene or else it would've gone on for longer. Axe

There's a film coming up about the life of Mestre Bimba, which should be good. He invented the regional style, for anyone interested.

If you just want to see good capoeira, and not specifically capoeira in a proper film then searched for something like "capoeira roda" on google video or youtube or something, there's absolutely heaps.

I think the Nightfox uses capoera in Ocean's Twelve to navigate a security net and I also believe natives uses it to fight the Rock in the Rundown.

If I am not mistaken, there are elements of Capoeira in the very same Mark Dacascos' Crying Freeman as well, however he uses and blends quite a few different styles in this film. But particularly in the jungle towards the end I vaguely remember moments of Capoeira. This is another great film, by the way, for those of you who have not seen it. A well crafted B-movie of A-movie characteristics.

Not too sure if it features distinctly in Le Pacte des Loupes (Brotherhood of the Wolf), as it is not really a martial arts movie, but so much of what Dacascos does carries the influence of Capoeira.

Yes, Alah2051. The moves nightfox uses in Ocean's 12 are capoeira angola type movements. Slower and more pronounced.

reply

Blade 2's commentary with Snipes mentions his use of Capoeira in the movie.

reply

I only saw a couple episodes of Crow the TV show, but I remember seeing Dacascos use his Capoeira in that a few times.

shootfighter 2 has some capoeira in it.

reply

Wesley Snipes is a master of capoera, so a couple of his movies have some in it (the only one I know for sure is "Passenger 57").

My friend & Mestre Cesar Carneiro was in three films as a Capoeira Fighter. "Only the Strong", "The Quest", & "Shootfighter 2". He hasnt starred in any since then. I went to Bahia Salvador Brazil & stayed with him & his family twice & trained under him. I'm going to tell you all, the stuff that Lateef Crowder did in that Tai film would get his a** kicked in Salvador Brazil. They are much more agressive in the fighting style down there. This is the same place where Mestre Bimba himself originated. There are tons of Capoeira acadamies down there & there are 15 year old boys that can beat up grown men. They don't use mats, they actually have barefoot rodas in the streets. They use alot of take downs & choke holds & the ginga is much tighter more on the lines of a boxer. Although there are flashy moves you usually wont use them in an intense game or else you will get hurt. I was baptized my Mestre King Kong back in 1999. If you don't know who he is, ask anyone that knows anything about real Capoeira & they will tell you he is one of the most dangerous capoeira masters in Brazil. If you guys notice in Only the Strong notice how Mark Dacasscos is not very close when sparring with Mestre Amen Santos in the beginning of the film. He basically does some flashy kicks & acrobatics. he couldnt keep up with Amen... The two best games are with Mestre Cesar(he was 24 then) & Mestre Amen. Look how close they get when they are dodging kicks. They both hail out of Salvador & they are playing real Capoeira.

In the movie "The Rundown" with The Rock, there's a scene where all these Brazilian freedom fighters fight with him in the jungle, and they use some Capoeira moves.

Watch Undistputed 3: Redemption. There is a very talented Capoeira fighter in there. Also, the movie is extremely good for action fans.

Wesley Snipes uses Capoeira in some of his films. I noticed it more in the first Blade movie during the fight scenes toward the end of the movie. Other than certain characters practicing Capoeira during a fight scene in other movies, I don't think there is a movie like "Only The Strong" in which the whole movie is kind of centered on it.
