This is crap when watched older.

I first watched Ninja Scroll when I was 14 years old and thought it was amazing. I tried watching it now (I'm 23) and found it to be total crap and boring. I found the action scenes lackluster. I also feel the same about Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie. I bought Spriggan and found that crap as well. I think I'm too old for anime now, it's something for 12-18 year olds. I wanted to get Cyber City Oedo as it's something I enjoyed as a 12 year old but I'll probably end up hating that as well.

Does anyone else feel the same? Are there any good action animes that can revve my interest?

reply

Yeah, I can relate to that too. I'm 23 also and Ninja scroll doesn't quite have the same kick now compared to when I watched it in my teens. It's still a good film though. I still really enjoy "The Professional: Golgo 13"... that's a film I've come to appriciate more as I've got older.

Yeah man, I'm in my 20's now too and watching Street Fighter as well as Ninja Scroll just doesn't give the same kick anymore. I've yet to find anything that revives my interest.

I think the reason we don't anime as enjoyable now is probably because we used to watch other western cartoons at the time and thought that anime was amazing in comparison due to it's violence and bad language. Now that we've grown up it all seems a little silly.

reply

I remember when I first saw 'Vampire Hunter D' on the Sci-Fi Channel, I thought it was amazing, I had to be around 12-13, I'm 25 now and I can't watch it with out falling asleep......I guess its just something with the times and experiencing everything.
I also used to really enjoy action movies a lot.....but now most are boring and dry: some stand the test of time like T2 but most stories are uninspired just stuff blowing up.
The same goes for music; a lot does not impress me, most {98% of} rap music is dreadful and unimaginative.

But as far as anime goes don't give up on it, there is quality stuff its just a matter of discovery.

I don't know what you have seen, and of course opinions vary, but what I have watched recently or re-watched that I have enjoyed are.....
Princess Mononoke{along with 'Spirited Away' are top-notch}

Gankutsuou Count of Monte Cristo {a familiar story with a unique artistic style}

Monster! {Its not an action anime but it has a Great story, something that should not be missed}

Elfen Lied {AMAZING, must see}

Gantz {the first episode is great the next 10 are annoying, but with persistence and diligence once you get past episode 11-12 its really good}

Neon Genesis Evangelion {about episode 9 it takes off to greatness never to return}

Cowboy Bebop {I put this off for along time due to the corny name but I finally watched it and its a very consistent High Quality anime}

Speed Grapher {Very entertaining}

Any-way I hope I encouraged you to check some stuff out and not give up on the art form.
If you watch anything, please post back and share your opinion.

Yeah, I feel the same way with modern action movies. They've become so cliche and run of the mill, you can predict when stuff will start blowing up. Modern music too is also really bad. Not just with rap but even modern rock. Everyone is either ripping off Killswitch Engage (used to be a fan) or Hatebreed (never got the appeal). I also hate the loud, clangy, and compressed production most mainstream bands rely on. Give me the Melvins, Godflesh, and Bad Religion anyday over those type of bands.

As for Ninja Scroll, I saw it for the first time a few months early in this year after learning it's influence on the Samurai Shodown series. It immediately became one of my top anime movies and it never loses its vitality each time I watch it. I feel the same way with the SF II movie. I wish there was more anime adaptions of fighting game series.

Personally I'm a rather big fan of modern music. Not the pop kind whatsoever, but heavy metal. Some recent metal sub-genres such as progressive metal, mostly the kind incorporating death metal elements, are quickly becoming my favorites. Gojira are fantastic, I think, and so are Opeth (although they've been around since like '93). I also like Cynic, but they are more jazzy metal, especially with their currently-latest album 'Traced In Air' -- something I'd recommend to even non-metal fans! Brilliant, complex song-writing, definitely on par with Porcupine Tree and the like in those terms. Although I'd definitely rather draw some similarities between Opeth and Porcupine Tree, rather than Porcupine Tree and Cynic. While Opeth has death metal elements (such as growling and overall heaviness) and Porcupine Tree are just rock, they're of that same type (yeah, progressive); unusual song structures, odd time signatures, and all of that. Opeth do have some rock mixed in with the death metal, though. And even a lot of songs with complete absence of the latter.

Even so, just as a little FYI, there's A LOT of rock and metal bands out there today that are NOT metalcore (the genre Killswitch Engage and Hatebreed are of). You just need to dig through all of that crap. You should find a lot of different music under there.

Really, all one needs to do is to look beyond the mainstream. For me, such will never appeal. They all just try to sound the same as formerly successful music groups. There's very little originality, I think. They're afraid of trying something new. It's like they've decided from the start that "we shall be pop". No innovation.

Not that any of this is relevant. He wasn't saying modern anime is bad; he was saying he outgrew the anime he used to like. So if anything, we should be discussing old music now.

Right on! I saw Opeth and Cynic a few years ago at Shepherds Bush in London. They were amazing!

First time I watched this was like 10 years ago. Just watched it again recently and it still packs the same amount of awesomeness and brutality as it did. Same impact. The animation is superb. Jubei having to rip his way through "the 8 devils of ceemone!" So I totally disagree with the OP and second poster.

reply

im 23, saw it at 13 and i disagree...if any anime endures, it is deffinately ninja scroll...jubie kicks so much ass, they needed to animate him butchering an entire army...plus the characters, style of violence, and overall storyteling easily make it a top 10 anime. "dont think i wouldnt mind raping a dead girl" doesnt it take a animated stone devil to say something that messed up?

reply

^^^^^

Second that.

For those wanting a fresh, smart anime, try Death Note.

Guaranteed.

reply

I don't know about this. I first saw this movie this year, when I was 22, now I'm 23, and I loved this movie. It reminds me of old videos games like final fantasy. Maybe you guys aren't blown away because you're so used to the plot and the special incidents. Everyone who I show the movie to in my age group loves it and think that this movie is badass.

reply

I first saw this when I was 9 (yeah bad me) and now I'm 15. This is still in my top 10 anime. The animation never shows its age and the action never gets boring. I don't know, I guess I get hooked in by the music.

I'm gonna get you, like a spaceboy. Whoa whoa whoa whoa!!!

reply

I sorta know what you mean but Street Fighter 2 will forever at least in my eyes remain a classic, i love that movie to the core.

I just borrowed this movie off a friend so we'll see.

reply

Total opposite for me. I enjoy anime more older.

Yeah, I'm 20 and I still like them both. Very basic plot but still a fun ride. It's better though the first time you see them. I also like shows with good plot and action together like Naruto (minus the awful filler) and Full Metal Alchemist.

I watched this for the first time a couple of weeks ago, (I'm 39) and thought it was good enough, I certainly enjoyed it. Doubt I'll watch it again though.

I'd recommend anything from Studio Ghibli (I've seen them all at least twice each) and have no doubt they'll stand the test of time and age, they range from pretty damn good to totally excellent. They aren't generally action-focussed though, but that's probably a plus.

"This is crap when watched older."

That's kinda strange considering this is aimed at an older audience. But still, it depends on the person. I'm eighteen and first watched this when I was seven, (not recommended!)and still get a few playbacks from time to time, especially at my favourite scenes. I love it, especially with Jubei and Kagero's tragic love tale. I wish there were more anime aimed at adults, especially in this style.

Kawajiri is the man!

reply

man yall are crazy, im 28 and i saw ninja scroll when i was young and i think it has the same feel to it as it did then, same with akira, fist of the north star (that anime is still the *beep* castle of cagliostro, and many more......i feel the newer animes are more of a lackluster than the older ones.

reply

on the nose sir. Newer stuff just doesn't nearly have the same "umph" as older anime. I watched Ninja Scroll the other day and it still is just a fun watch to say the least. To be honest, it's a neat tale of how all these factions of ninjas are plotting against each other and other espionage. There is some plot I missed as a kid when I watched it the other day too.

Ninja Scroll is important as much as a Studio Ghibli movie. The amount of detail given to the fantastic animation is really almost art in motion. Ghibli movies fantastic, so don't get me wrong. Though, I feel like it's the only thing that gets praise from Japan in terms of animation. Ninja Scroll is deff. for adults. There is no question about that. The scope of the adventure is quite on par with that of a Ghibli film.

Also, anything Kawajiri does is just gold. He treats the medium as an intense movie that no one has tried to make before.

reply

I'm 25 and I still like Ninja Scroll, even if I find more enjoyable "spirited away" or "the grave of the fireflies" (a must see), and I like "akira" a lot more now than when I first saw it, i was like 9.

reply

I saw both Akira and Ninja Scroll when I was about 18-19, I'm 24 (almost 25) now and they still kick the same amount of ass.

Spriggan is good to, not as violent but some decent action and story.

reply

I saw Ninja Scroll when I was 17 and thought it absolutely kicked ass. It was the first hardcore blood-and-boobs anime I'd ever seen; in fact, it was one of only a few such movies I'd ever seen, period. I'm only 20 now but I still think I was kind of immature back then.

This film is not bad, good for some mindless fun, but it will never have as much an impact on me as anything from Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli.

reply

You bring up an interesting point.

All: Why is everyone comparing this film to Ghibli's output? Kawajiri's directing style is WORLDS away from Miyazaki, Oshii, Kon, or any of the "serious" anime directors. Other than being animated and in Japanese, this has nothing in common with the likes of Spirited Away or Millennium Actress, and was not meant to be enjoyed in the same way, or even by the same people. I love Ninja Scroll, but it isn't high art; its exploitation at its finest, with a gauntlet of crazy villians and an insane plot device hinging on the main characters having sex (or not). I mean, you wouldn't compare a a film like Desperado to something like 12 Angry Men, would you? Both are great films, but screws go in one drawer and nails in the other.

reply

Well said sir. I think the opener must have been bored and felt like trolling.

reply

I gotta agree with you there to an extent. I saw Ninja Scroll for the first time a little while ago and it was terrible. I only started getting into anime recently and that was one of the worst ones I have seen.

I've seen Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Princess Monoke, and those movies define, for me at least, what anime should be like.

Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke are two of the most overrated animes ever.

I´m sorry... that was my tourettes.

reply

I don't really know how they're overrated. More commercial maybe, but not overrated. Can you suggest other anime I should watch? I want something with a good story and good animation. My brother has connections to a video store and I can organize to watch them.

"Give me but one firm place on which to stand and I shall move the Earth." - ARCHIMEDES

reply

Well, that depends on what genre you´re looking for. "Grave of the Fireflies" is a very sentimental and touching movie. "Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust" has visually beautiful action scenes as well as an emotional story. The "Death Note" series is one of the most brilliant things to come out in th anime world, although you won´t it in a video store since it´s new. The "Samurai Deeper Kuy" series combines action and humour and is quite entertaining... well, it gets to complicated in the later episodes, but still worth it.

It´s better if you tell what genre you are most interested in, I can give you better and more concrete examples then.

I´m sorry... that was my tourettes.

reply

To be honest, I like sci-fi. Anything that has to do with science fiction and doesn't require too much suspension of disbelief.

Then I really suggest "Neon Genesis Evangelion". Perhaps you´ve already heard of it, since it´s huge success brought it to a more "mainstream" market. Regardless, it´s really worth checking out.

I´m sorry... that was my tourettes.
