The part that ruined it for me.

I really wanted to like this movie. The animation was well done, the fighting was excellent, the villains were awesome, and the plot was interesting and only occasionally nonsensical. It was great in all these aspects, but I couldn't take the rape scene.

I have no problem with rape occurring in film. What bothers me about this scene is that it obviously meant to excite the viewer. Portraying sexual violence in an erotic way is wrong, because it isn't erotic. Trying to arouse the audience with a rape scene is something I find hard to reconcile with the otherwise great aspects of this film.

Perhaps this is hypocritically of me. Chopping people to tiny bits is just as wrong as rape, yet I love movies with over-the-top violence. Being excited about ridiculously huge geysers of blood is really no different than being aroused by a rape scene, but I'm guilty of that and not troubled by it in the least.

The rape scene just bothered me, and I find it hard to justify liking a film that does that, regardless of how awesome it is otherwise. I was wondering what you all think of this.

LOL!It's a cartoon! BTW,if this frightened you, I dare you to watch Urotsukidoji.LOL.

"Warhorse. Warhead, Fuq 'em, man, White knuckle tight. Through black and white"

reply

It wasn't frightening. I just think that the movie was doing something morally wrong in its portrayal of rape.

I didn't find it erotic. The way he manhandles Kagero and marinates her with his tongue. It showed what a beast Tessai was.

reply

I found it funny rather than erotic OR scary.

"Warhorse. Warhead, Fuq 'em, man, White knuckle tight. Through black and white"

Maybe you're the one being aroused by that scene, that's why you feel guilty about watching it only kidding.. am I?

reply

Sonicmozart is right. I think he has a guilty conscience, because he got hard, watching that scene.LOL

jeez. no biggie. it happens to the best of us. just don't obsess over it.

reply

So what if you got a stiffy from watching a cartoon, you don't have to be ashamed of yourself.LOL.

"Warhorse. Warhead, Fuq 'em, man, White knuckle tight. Through black and white"

reply

LOL,you guys are a-holes.

But yeah...like one of the earlier posters said...it was just to show how much of a cold hearted beast Tessai was.

reply

i thought it was funny but i felt grossed out for her more.
but it certainly didn't bother me as much as seeing teen girls on network tv dressed like skanks.

- Huh, it was? Neither I nor anyone felt that this partcular scene was "exciting". If anything, it only shows what a sociopathic brute Tessai is. My friend, I think you're the only one who found the scene to be "exciting".

You might have been inadvertently aroused by it, but I wasn't. I've seen anime films with rape scenes that were obviously made to titilate (like Angel of Darkness and Kite, just to name a few), and this is not one of them. In fact, I think the manner in which this movie deals with the reality of sexual assault is one of the best things about it. Especially the poignant portrayl of Kagero.

Sorry but when the scene came on, did it say "This scene is meant to excite you."... I didn't see anything saying it was meant to be exciting and I don't think anyone did except you. Yeah it has got t.i.ts in it, but it's a rape scene. Do you just expect her to have all her clothes on and that big rock person just gently kiss her on the cheek then let her go? No, it's meant to be a very sad moment, it's meant to make you feel sorry for Kagero and hate the rock man, and I definatly hated him when I saw that scene. I thought the artist/producer did the scene and the entire movie very well.

While I understand how the OP doesn't like rape scenes (hint: you're not supposed too! That's why the good guys in movies don't do it!), I don't think any of the sexual scenes in this film were intended to be erotic.

Man no one has addressed the key reason for having this scene in there in the first place. If this scene never occurred then Jubei may have never or would have had a harder time defeating Tessai. That was the whole point. She carries a deadly poison through her veins, saliva, bodily fluids that will kill any man that sleeps with her. Tessai had no knowledge of this when he violated her. When Tessai battled Jubei he didn't realize he was poisoned. Furthermore weakening his power. So I am sure he could have just violated her by Kissing her but thats pretty unrealistic considering the ugly nature of who Tessai is.

Scenes like the Doggy style, fingering and rape scene is showing how women in Japan are not seen as equals especially in that era. It also reflects how much integrity and honor Jubei has towards her and her life. Japanese culture has a obsession for this kind of thing anyway. No doubt the writer and director could have toned the scenes down by rewriting the script and plot-line but this movie was not made for americans and our so called "Morality". If you went to a store that contained anime books, movies, and toys in Japan. You would see a ton of Hentai, Fetishes and adult sexual content all over the place. Thats just their animes as well. Their live action is just as bad if not worst. So what you saw in Ninja Scroll was disturbing, but the reality is that it is just .000001% of how much crap and sexual content that is out their for japanese Anime alone. You would be even more surprised the level of quality in animation and artistic merit that they put into those types of movies. Its definitely disturbing that they make as much of that sh!t compared to our own porn industry in america.

So be thankful that this movie didn't fall heavily into that category because I probably would have never bothered to watch it at all let alone make it part of my list of favorite animes of all time.

Well the guy IS right, read about pornography in japan on wikipedia and you can see that there is a whole genre of porn movies involving monsters and humans.

The director ment to excite the vievers.

Just shows what a misogynist piece of trash this movie is. Makes me sick that this is considered a classic of anime when genuinely original and creative stuff gets ignored.

"Where do you want to go?"
"Wherever you want to take me."

reply

Did you just look that word up? Of course it's misogynistic. It's based in Feudal Japan. That is part of the story. How thick are you?
