Am I horrible for feeling really bad for Oogie Boogie at the end of the movie? I know he kidnapped Santa Claus and all that, but I thought killing him off in such a way was really harsh for such a likable character.
I mean, when the poor guy notices his thread is caught and he's about to be skinned alive, he whimpers and pleads to Jack for his life. But, rather coldly, Jack goes through with it and even as Oogie is screaming and pieces of him are falling into the snake and spider stew, Jack has this look on his face like "You deserved this". But I dunno...I didn't think he deserved it
Yes, that is true. And that is pretty awful. But no one ended up dying and Jack literally killed Oogie after the battle and not while trying to save himself, which disturbed me because usually the hero is noble enough not to resort to killing (especially in ways so gruesome) when they aren't in immediate danger. Which, I guess, really makes Jack BADASS. But it still disturbed me.
I guess another reason I feel bad for him is because Oogie didn't get a lot of character development. I just want to know why everyone in Halloweentown didn't like him and why Jack did not want him to be involved involved in festivities. Without somewhat of a back story in the movie, we never really know why he was horrible enough to be skinned alive, a pretty gruesome fate for not actually getting away with any kind of murder. And no one ever really gives it a second thought afterward. I mean, Jack looks almost pleased as Oogie is crying and whimpering, and even Oogie's own 'boys', who pledged loyalty to him earlier in the film, seem unphased that he was killed and that his skin is just laying around in his lair now. I dunno. It always kind of bothered me and made me have sympathy for the guy.
Considering that Ooogie lives in the outskirts of town and even his minions are feared and untrusted, I assume he did some pretty bad stuff to earn a reputation like that. We catch him about to boil Santa and Sally alive in a heavily implied plan to eat them. Maybe there's a reason he was banished to the basement of a treehouse. Maybe he's Halloween Town's resident cannibal.
He was an interesting character and a ton of fun, but he was evil to the bone (or bugs). He got what was coming to him. Although if it makes you feel better, he returns in the video games. :3
How exactly is he likable? I think there's probably a good reason he's not allowed to be in Halloween Town. Plus he delights in Torturing Santa and Sally. He goes on about how he likes to Gamble with peoples' lives at the roll of a dice. He seems really happy and is dancing around when he thinks he killed Santa and Sally. This is just stupid. Next thing you know you're going to be telling me Hans Gruber in Die Hard is sympathetic and likable.
