Max von Sydow - Greatest Actor Ever

Hands down...

reply

He is fantastic. I've never seen him in a bad role.

reply

I third the motion.

You guys wanna know an interesting set of trivia (that I came up with myself)?

Max Von Sydow is probably the only actor in history to ever play an exorcist in one movie, Jesus Christ in another movie, and then the Devil in another.

Neat, huh..?

And a pretty obnoxious missionary in another.

Actually I did not like Max's portrayal of Jesus, but I suppose that could be more the fault of the screenplay writer than Max.
He seemed to be saying a lot of the Biblical stuff right outside of its proper context

Not to mention that he also played chess with death (The Seventh Seal)

reply

I'm proud to be from the same place as him. One of the few people I would like to meet. Yeah, I just put him right up there with Einstein, Linné, Nobel, Tesla and Darwin :P

He is a good actor, but far from the best. Check out Ian McKellans role in Apt Pupil if you wanan see a better performance by an old man(hrhr) in a Stephen King based flick.

reply

IMO Max von Sydow is Ian McKellen's older brother. Ian is ten years younger and has a more tender style of acting, while Max is more robust (although he can play a very brittle but will-strong personage like father Merrin in The Exorcist).
Both are classical, heavyweight actors. I was in awe of Max's performance here, but also am curious how Ian would have given it a try.

Not the greatest ever, but a very solid performer all the same. Dependable in every role he's in.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

These two are also two of my favourite actors, very impressive artists.

reply

Max is consistently solid, but I could hardly say greatest ever, since his is only the third best performance even in this film. Ed Harris is better here (and in general), and J. T. Walsh is the best of the bunch, giving a typically riveting performance.

reply

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST ACTING JOB WAS BY ED HARRIS IN JUST CAUSE. I don't care what anyone says. I watched him in that film and I just stared at the tv and said "oh my god, this guy deserved the Oscar"

reply

He's such a charming devil:D

I cant disagree with that.

And one of the few to have played both God and the devil on screen.
