Am I the only person...

Okay, when I first saw this movie, I was about five or six (I have my father to thank for that...grr). It scared the crap outta me to the point where I have had nightmares about this movie up until today.

Last summer, a friend of mine coaxed me into watching it with her (I hade made the mistake of telling her about it prior to the event), promising me that I'd laugh at it now. Yeah right...the movie gave me a panic attack! My mother thought she'd have to call animal control to come over and take me away! This isn't right...I'm into scarier stuff than this, and yet I'm still freaked out...guh...stupid Whispers story.

Great movie but not yet on DVD. Copied it on DVD last night from MOMAX at 3:00AM SP/Video so it can be copied and played on any DVD when finalized.

reply

Please tell me that you live in Denmark, so that you can easily mail a copy to me...

I'd really love to see it!

reply

hahaha. its not that scary, dude. just kinda nasty

reply

Sorry to hear that. Damn our minds and the way they can be conditioned! You should personally thank your dad for screwing you up on this movie.

I just watched it today. Nice trash tribute. The biggest surprise of it was David Warner. Now... that's odd.

The movie's attempt to adaptate the stories to a "today" model were quite non-Lovecraftian. Like a cop shooting the... things. Still, it's good-spirited. It has Jeffrey Combs, AKA Herbert West.

reply

That's thing that gets me about this movie is that it reall is like one BAD DREAM.

reply

The first two tales aren't very good at all, but the last one with Sarah and Paul has got to be some of the most terrifying footage ever put on film.

Someone ought to make a movie only about that. I'm sure they could stretch it out for 90 minutes.

It's one of the few times I really felt sorry for the victim(s).

reply

Woo... I hardly believe you really did a panic attack 'cause of this movie.

Furtermore, I did a few panic attack in my life(worse experience than anything you could ever humanly conceive!!!), and it's impossible to directly find out what 'caused it you know.

So you either didn't had one, but only a very bad feeling, or you did, and it coïncided with this event. Still, maybe your subconscious related these pictures to your previous childhood traumatism and then caused you to 'panic', but I hardly doubt about a real attack!!

How strange. I saw this film on the 'tele' some years ago and it'haunted; me.

Eventually got hold of the DVD but, sadly, what a load of unmitigated bollocks!!

Oh - by the way 'Mis Dis' there are a lot worse feelings to have than 'panic attacks' - let the term of phrase go!!

reply

Well, actually, lots of peoples think like you because they never had one, or just thought they had one, while they did not. This is really frustrating. A person who never experienced this and who get a panic/anxiety attack for the first time usually think he/she's about to die, do this gives you an idea?

I'm 23, and I had many tough experiences in my life, physically and psychologically, and these attacks are just unreal and impossible to describe; it's the worst thing I've ever felt!!! PERIOD! It's total terror on every senses, in addition to feel in total despair! Half-abstract and surreal, and half-conscious...

So for God's sake, make sure that you know what you're talking about!!

Take care Mis Anth.

Judge as you would be judged. I do know what you are talking about re panic attacks (and the rest) but this is not appropriate forum for that discussion.

That said, sorry for any offence and I hope you learn not to define yourself by your problems.

reply

I agree, this isn't the place to debate about that.
Although I don't think I define myself by my problems, I was just trying to keep the seriousness of the subject respected...

Anyway, a'right, have a nice day!

Agreed this film sucks big time!

reply

No way man me too, lol. Thing scares teh crap out of me too DivineEx, I'm 25 seen all sorts of stuff since this movie still is on my most horrific list. I don't know why either, there's others that are way more believable special effects wise. But ya I hear ya, lol. Some wierd *beep* but strangely still one of my favorites, although I dare not ever watch it again, hehe. And Misanthropic Disease, I understand how it is a serious condition, but I do believ that the posters herre were referring to it figuratively, much in the same way one would say 'I was so scared I almost died', the literal meaning wasnt that they died, its just a figurative comparison (ex:its raining cats and dogs)

reply

I couldn't imagine watching such hard stuff with 5 or 6 years... that's extreme.

I like this movie, got it on VHS and it still works well. Of the 3 stories of course the last one is the best but I woulnd't say that the other two are that bad.
The whole movie is one of the best horror pictures I know, I like the atmosphere in it.

reply

I agree with you, the part of the cave is so claustrophobic, this is one of the best stories ever made. It reminds me of the Descent, somehow, maybe it was inspired by this? the third story = Pure genius.

Even if the SFX weren't Oscar caliber, I think the intent trumps actual SFX. It kinda worms it's way into your mind, and the concept of what's going on in the third story is far more disturbing than what you actually see. It's one of those rare occasions in horror that you can actually put yourself in that situation and question how horrible it would be to experience such a thing. Hokey SFX, and generally goofy movie, anything that can invoke such a form of terror in a person's mind that it lingers on afterwards, ESPECIALLY if it's something unrealistic, THAT'S good horror.

reply

Everybody has certain images or concepts that are too much for them to handle. Most of us can use defense mechanisms to keep our cool, but still freak out inside our heads. So when a movie has those elements that movie can be the scariest thing we've ever seen even though other people might think it's a mild or just goofy horror movie.

For me. it's Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, Black Sabbath (The dead woman and the ring), Hellraiser, Silent Hill, and others. I logically know that these are just horror movies and some of them aren't that scary to most, but when those certain scenes, sound, or visuals come up I FREAK!!!

reply

I've seen MANY horror movies (including ones based off of Lovecraft, such as Dagon) before seeing this one, and I'd have to say that despite the "quality" of this movie, there were parts that were disturbing to me. I personally like this movie for having that aspect. Today's horror movies don't seem to have that effect.
