Johnny and Tattoos

Johnny seems to have a strange reaction to the tattoo of the 'woman in the window', when he is invited into her flat. He also has a notable reaction to Sophie's tattoo much earlier in the film. Can anyone explain this?

Good Question!,

Urm... I don't actually know the real answer but the way i see it is that by having the tattoo's the woman have been branded and are "unclean" (the whole adam and eve thing), and i think this reminds Johnny in some way of his mother who he sees as a "Whore", and so the woman don't deserve any respect from him. Me thinks anyways.

Hope this was some use :).

The critic Graham Fuller has this to say:

'A fallen angel, Johnny is a messenger - but a messenger of what exactly? When he brutalizes a needy, drunken woman in her room, the skull and crossbones tattooed near her shoulder reveals that it is she, not he, who is the angel of death, a chilling realization that cancels out even his survivalist gallows humour.'

For me, the tattoo on the woman in the window is representing her as poison. It is the exact mark put on packets of rat poison. Obviously after seeing it he aint gonna touch. this is backed up in some way a few seconds later when he says "You dont wanna *beep* me, you'll catch something evil" (Or something like that, it's been a while since i watched it.)
There's quite a lot of mythical imagery in the film, most notably Brian the security guard who is the guardian of space ('What you gaurding?' 'Space') and the girl from the cafe who has something to do with time ('Touching time with a bargepole. I wouldn't' and other references.)

Any elaboration on these theories would be quite welcome though.

Johnny is often referring to the end of mankind, and the end of life, so to me the symbol of the skull was a sign to him... something powerful about death. And he was thrown off.

The idea that he considers tattoos a form of branding like the barcodes is also possibly related but might be a stretch...

Pressing his head against the body of the woman also evokes the Return of the Prodigal Son.
