exellent movie

i was finally able to watch the movie tonight. It was an excellent film. i do feel the need to re-watch it however as i am uncertain what a few of the scenes actually meant. it was very difficult to understand what the characters were saying at times. i wanted to put it on subtitles, but for some reason couldnt find where to turn that option on the dvd-does anyone know?

I assume you're watching the Criterion DVD. I don't remember seeing anything about subtitles on the main menu, but I wasn't looking for it.

Your remote should have a subtitle button. I know that's what I used whenever there was a part that needed clarification.

Cubbie 12,
I'm jealous that you can actually watch this movie on DVD. In Britain it's not even realised on DVD, even though it topped a poll recently of best British films. I totally love this movie, and I'm thankful for people who told me years ago to watch films by 'Mike Leigh'. I have not seen this film for ages, and I wait daily to hear they are releasing it here on DVD. Although I have not seen it for a while, it's still fresh in my head, it's that powerful. David Thewlis is, as you know, wonderful in this movie. I read, that for part of the improv, he had to just hang around in scruffy clothes outside Leicester Square tube station( a place I know pretty well), Leigh observed him through a small camera tied to a lamp post several feet away. Thewlis was even approached by an old friend who was concerned to see David looking tatty and a bit drunk/mad and hanging aimlessly around a tube station.
Let us know if there's any slang or whatever you might not understand, I'll do my best to explain it..
Cheers
