Didn't get it

I'm not saying it is a bad film by any stretch. The acting is great and it is interesting, but I don't really feel like I got what Mike Leigh was going for here.

Anyone have any sort of insights that might make me go "Ooooh, now I got it."?

I couldn't figure out if the film was meant to be funny or serious. It seemed like a parody of the late 50s/early 60s kitchen sink dramas like Room At The Top. The way characters (especially Sebastian/Jeremy, who reminded me of Rik Mayall's Alan B'stard) and certain scenes were set up was over the top, as if played for laughs, but I found it unfunny and rather dreary.

And don't get me started on Johnny, he was so annoying I actually cheered when he got beaten up.
