Sebastian and the massuse

There is one thing I'm puzzled about. The massuse obvious disliked Sebastian, so why did she end up going to o dinner with him?

Money

reply

She didn't know he had money. She asked at dinner if he was rich - he didn't answer. Clearly he didn't behave like someone from the upper crust - eating greasy fried chicken with his hands, peeling the skin off, licking his fingers lewdly, making remarks about her breasts in front of a waitress, snickering and chortling, etc. He is so vulgar, snide, and fake he makes Patrick Bateman seem charming and genuine.

reply

I would say he just wore her down like many abusive men. She didn't seem to know he had money because she asked "are you rich?" at the restaurant, when she saw him eating fried chicken (or the like) messily with his fingers - not something rich people who eat in nice restaurants and expect to come back would usually do. He behaved like a mix of high brow and low brow with some sadisf or sociopath thrown in - similar to Johnny, but much more extreme and brutal with no chatm

Just a tiny bit to add - she asked him if he were rich after seeing a particularly nice looking ring on his pinky/little finger.

reply

I didn't notice the ring. Unless she bit it or took it to a jeweler, it could have been fake for all she knew. Or it could have been given to him by his parents or stolen. And having one nice pinky ring doesn't make you rich any more than having an expensive handbag or fancy shoes or glasses frames makes a poor woman rich.

reply

If he offered to buy her dinner, she may have just wanted a free meal.
