THIS KEPT ME FROM SUICIDE, I SWEAR

Hard to believe, but true.

Unlike the many who noisily threaten suicide but don't really have the balls to go through with it, I had quietly done all my goodbyes: gave away whatever i hadn't already lost; called loved ones up just to say hello and thank you; visited old friends for no reason, saying "just passing through"; even flew once or twice, just to take my college confidante out to coffee, saying i was on a daytrip for a meeting (when in fact i was flying back home right after coffee).

On the ridiculously gorgeous day that i was supposed to end it all, i phoned a chronically sunny and chronically clueless friend, Lizzie J, to ask her what nice movie was there to see (not telling her, of course, what i intended to do afterthe movie). She chirped, My Girl.

Absentmindedly, I entered the wrong theater. That's the only reason I'm still here.

well, if i would be you, i would be already calling her right now... :)

I can see that.

This is EASILY the most relentless tear-jerker I have ever seen. And that is meant 1000% as a compliment.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

how ironic, cuz this movie actually made me WANT to commit suicide

reply

depaulbeatkuHA, you're heartless cynic

That story about going into the wrong theater is incredible. I can see why My Life would change your mind, this really is a great, great film

reply

wow depaulbeatkuHA. way to be a jerk

reply

I don't think depaulbeatkuHA is so much a heartless cynic as maybe wondering how it could possibly be true?

These movies were released 2 YEARS apart. There's no way they would have been in the movie theater at the same time.

It's a nice story, though.

I like this guy's response. This guy's response made me smile.

reply

Well, i live in Manila, where these movies were screened at the same time.

Sorry for late reply.

reply

Thats a really cool story. I've seen this movie once and it is the only movie to really make me cry, *beep* that Titanic *beep*

hey Eric I believe you man, good for you, I'm happy that happened for ya. Screw these naysayers.

The first My Girl, yes, but My Girl 2 and My Life were released only a couple months apart (My Life in late 1993/My Girl 2 in early 1994), so those two would have been in theatres at the same time.

reply

Unfortunately, he didn't say My Girl 2. He said My Girl. I would think he would get the names of the movies right...considering they saved his life and all.

What you call discovery, I call the rape of the natural world.

reply

Wolfman is right. Moreover the words My Girl and My Life are not same sounding words. This chap is only screaming for attention through a nice story. He may have had feelings of taking his own life but setting out to meeting people, flying down, calling up for saying Thanks is all concocted.

What you do in Life... echoes in Eternity.

The titles look similar. He said he walked into the wrong movie.
Have you ever been to a movie theater?
The movie titles are in TEXT above the doors.
They are not spoken aloud as you enter the theater, you moron.

My _i__

Girl and Life both are the same length. This was suicide day...you really think he was double-checking the title (just in case there might be a movie with a similar title that year?).

My god. You're so stupid.

reply

I am glad you changed your mind. You can't take your life for granted.

reply

I'm really glad you're still here Ericflo, and also that you shared your story -- its impact is very much like the movie's.

I found this movie really powerful and right on the money in terms of emotional honesty. Yeah, ok, the roller coaster ride into the white light was a little light weight in balace with the movie, but I didn't really object to a little "the afterlife rocks" enthusiasm at the end of a film as intense as this one.

What really caught my attention was that, within minutes after watching this movie, and to my complete amazement, I found myself thinking that it would actually be nice to invite my father (who I've not spoken to and have only emailed with about a half dozen times over the last nearly 3 years) and his family to visit. Now, I haven't picked up the phone (yet?), but it sure feels like a door has opened, and I hope to keep it that way.

Can't think of too many films with that kind of impact.

It does make you cherish life and everything it offers.

That was a very touching story, Eric, and I am so happy that you were able to find some meaning in your life.

reply

I do honestly think that this is the best post I've ever read on IMDB. 100% touched. I hope your life has gone well for you after that!
