Stakweather

So I saw this film on the otherday about mid-way though and I turned it off thinking, "Well I'll go to the video store and rent a copy." Trying to remember the name I came on here to be crushed by finding out it was made for tv and not a wide release. Too bad too since I'm a huge Tim Roth fan.

However, has anyone talked about this film being based on Starkweather? I realize that's Roth's character but anyone familiar with who Starkweather was? It's a pretty interesting story. You can see a straight to dvd film about him titled Starkweather. It's not great but not as bad as you'd think.

For refference Starkweather is a real person who's story insipered many works by Tarintino, such as True Romance and Natural Born Killers.

I'll have to find a copy of this being that I'd love to see starkweather played by Roth.

Wanna talk about creepy. Starkweather was executed shortly after midnight on June 25, 1959. My birthday just happens to be June 25th. :-(

I don't. I live in Miami. I'm seriously considering visiting Lincoln the week of my birthday. I've heard that Charlie's grave is sort of a tourist attraction. If I make the trip, I'll have to see all the sites there.

Charlie Starkweather lays in rest at Wyuka Cemetary, Lincoln, Nebraska. He's only about 30 feet away from the winding road through the cemetary. Take the Wyuka Cemetary tour, with their guide. http://www.wyuka.com

Someone put a rose directly in front of his headstone. Probly a goth girl set it there. His headstone is red in color, and has two roses carved into it, one at upper left, one at lower right.

My first visit to his tombstone was today. Near his grave I almost stepped on a snake working its way through the damp grass. Can't remember the last time I saw a snake. Well, maybe I do, it was in Orlando, Florida and the snake was a Cotton Mouth. He had the viper diamond head and a healthy, meaty body. It was at the boat ramp where I practiced slalom skiing for the Pro Water Ski Tour.

I got to finally go to Lincoln in March 2007 (couple of days drive from Miami to Lincoln!). Seen the graves of Charlie, his dad (buried way on the other side of the cemetary, odd because his dad was the only relative that would actually visit his grave), the Wards, the Bartletts, and buried just a few feet away from Charlie...Pansy Street (Caril's grandmother, Velda Bartlett's mother). And of course went to Bennet where I found the graves of August Meyer, Robert Jensen, & Carol King. I'm planning another trip when my birthday hits in June (my birthday is Charlie's execution day!) and I didn't have the time to search for the graves of Robet Colvert & Lilian Fencl, but I'll know where to look.

One of these years I'll have to go to Southeastern Montana to see where Custard's Last Stand happened (another famous event that occured on my birthday). Billings is not far from there and Great Falls (where Charlie's last victim Merle Collison is buried) is 222 miles from Billings.

I wonder how Lincoln will be on the 50th Anniversary of Charlie's execution in June 2009. It'll be my 39th birthday and I'll have to make that trip.

Know what's funny? We have another famous mass murderer named Charlie buried here (Charles Whitman, and his birthday is the day before mine!) and so far I still haven't been to the cemetary in West Palm Beach to see where he's buried!

How ironic that on the 50th Anniversary of Charlie's execution, I was in Lincoln, and while trying to find his dad's grave (which isn't easy to find) found out that Farrah Fawcett died. and while at Charlie's grave (which is very easy to find) got the news that Michael Jackson died. Everyone in Lincoln knows the anniversary in late January, but no one there knows the significance of June 25th. Last year I hit Southeast Montana and saw the Little Bighorn Battlefield. Creepy thing, on June 25th 1876, a soldier named August Meyer died at Custer's last stand. And of course another August Meyer's killer died on the same day in 1959. And Charlie's last victim, Merle Collison's only living relative has the same first name as me (and it is a very uncommon name). This case just gets creepier!

From the recent trip last month, I found where most people involved in the case are buried. Judge Harry Spencer (who sentenced Charlie to death) is also buried at Wyuka, he lived to be almost 104! So is his attorney William Matschullat, Mayor Bennett Martin, Governor Victor Anderson, Governor James Exon (who paroled Caril). Caril's father, William Fugate is buried in the same section as Charlie, but in an unmarked grave. At Lincoln Memorial Park, which is known for where murder victim Teena Brandon is buried, I have found: Sheriff Merle Karnopp (his widow is still alve at 100!), County Attorney Elmer Scheele (who in 1961 became a district court judge, replacing Harry Spencer, who became a Nebraska Supreme Court Judge), Deputy County Attorney Dale Fahrnbruch, Governor Ralph Brooks (who signed Charlie's death warrant), Charlie's other attorney T. Clement Gaughan, Caril's attorney John McArthur, and Nebraska State Penitentiary Deputy Warden John Greenholtz, who oversaw Charlie's execution (and told people afterwards that it was quite gruesome. He was violently ill for days and had nightmares for years).

The only people left to find are Lincoln Police Lt. Robert Henninger (who got the confession from Charlie about Robert Colvert's murder, Lincoln Police Chief Joe Carroll (both died in different cities and aren't at either Wyuka or LMP), Dr. PE Gerscher (who pronounced Charlie dead), Rev. Robert Klein (the prison chaplin who officiated over Charlie's funeral), and one of the biggest names that no one knows what happened to, Charlie's very own mother! The next trip in a year or two should be a doozy!

And just one row down, and a little to the left is Pansy Street's grave. Must suck spending all of eternity buried close to the guy that murdered her daughter.

Another creepy detail not part of the movie:

The man designated to pull the switch that sent Charlie Starkweather to his death, a physician in perfect health, dropped dead before he could accomplish the job. A replacement had to be rushed in.

========================================================
Two different people. The person paid to throw the switch was from out of state and was never identified. The physician was 75 years old and had been the physician at NSP for years.
