The beauty of simplicity

That's what this film is, especially the scenes when young Mui is learning to cook from the old maid. No stupid plot twists, no creepy ghosts, no cartoonish violence, just a simple scene perfectly and naturally enacted. I thought the young Mui played her part particularly well.

I agree, Willie, a film of extraordinary beauty and peace, in such a place and at such a time!

Mui is lovely and loving and she is rewarded for her faithfulness and grace with the man she loves and a better life...

Yeah except the country is in the midst of political turmoil during the time period of the film and the Vietnam War is about to begin. This movie isn't necessarily "simple," it's just understated.

I don't see why people want to dig deeper than what the movie actually is. It's a film for the senses, not for the mind.
