The brat

Does anybody think that probably the best character was the horrible little boy who plays pranks? He represents the typical spoilt, Oriental child- EXCELLENT.

reply

Yes, absolutely! I'm so glad somebody else thinks that...

reply

I thikn the actor did well, and got far more attention that his airtime would have indicated before, but I would say it's just not oriental it's just a typical spoiled child.

Good writers are those who discribe our feelings best!

reply

I'm not sure I understand the comment 'typical spoilt, Oriental child'. On one hand I agree that the behaviour is that of a spoilt child, I'm not sure whether it is typical of Oriental behaviour?

reply

Thank you for yet another ignorant, racist comment on the imdb board.

reply

lol, i didn't mean all oriental kids are brats...but as an oriental myself who's spent a lot of time over there, not all the kids, but alot of them, are brats!!! its not a racist thing...its just the way theyre usually brought up...

hi oom jawa,

i see what you mean. in Kozure Okami (a japanese series from the 70ies) on their travelling they meet a young boy who is spoilt. he also behaves very tipically

although i must say in the novel jane eyre we can see that the son of a middle class family is allowed anything, and he behaves in a cruel way with the governess

maybe what is similar in both cases is that the parents show a bad example in treating people who work for them (maidservants, governesses) badly, and obviously they believe that it is all right

Did you think the parents set a bad example in this film? How so?

Just watched the "Behind The Scenes" extra on the DVD and when this little boy appeared on screen, I thought, "he must be as much a little brat in real life"! Which made me realize that he is a really good actor because I couldn't separate the actor from the role...he did such a good job. Plus on that featurette, you see him outside his role, giving a peace sign to the cameraman. :-)

As for the character being spoiled, I would have to disagree. He was neglected (mainly by his Father), so he was acting out, his best attempt to draw attention to what was wrong within the family. His family was working middle class, not rich, so they did not have a great enough income to spoil him.

What does his race have to do with it? You've never encountered bratty kids in the West?

His behavior probably has a lot more to do with his class. Though evidently not rich, his family is privileged by Vietnamese standards and has servants that the kids get to treat like crap and they can't respond because they're "below" them in status. The kid has probably never heard the word "no" in his life. That's why he's a brat. His race has nothing to do with it.

Yeh, I regret how I wrote this post.

I was a teenager at the time, and had lived in Southeast Asia for a while. Coming from Europe, I was shocked by how relaxed Southeast Asian parents were, leaving child discipline to their nannies (even lower-class families). Now I realise it's just a cultural thing , to do with class culture in Asian society.
